Denton

I can't believe how much Denton changed from when I first arrived in 2006 to when I left in 2010. I think more change has happened in 2011 than any other year. So many restaurants/new apartments/new buildings @ UNT (oh ya, Apogee too). I don't know why anyone would chose to go to school out in Lubbock over Denton.

It's being corporatized by big city developers!!!! Woooooo!

Translation: Fry Street is being made attractive for Dentonites/alumni/out of towers who might actually have money to spend.

Oh how I'll mss the high school drop outs and their hacky sacks in front of the Tomato.

For some Fry street will never be the same. They enjoyed people urinating on the sidewalks, running into the drunk high school kids with their skateboards, the college drop outs still wanting to act like they are actually college students, the vomit on the sidewalks, each and every weekend, etc., etc.

To be fair, some of us will also miss the great hangouts like the State Club, the Tomato, etc.

But, Fry Street has long ago lost it's "luster" as unique and attractive place to hang out. It has pretty much become a "dump" and in it's present and recent past forms was doing no one much good. One may or may not like some of the ever-so-evil to some corporate money that is flowing into the area, but it is beginning to move forward with redevelopment and may one day return to a vibrant and economically sound area for both the city and the college students.

Fry Street long ago stopped being a great place to hang out. It's time to move along. Very happy to see the re-development beginning.

I can't wait for the Tomato to reopen. It will rival openings second only to what is about to happen on September 10th.

I am also excited that the place will become a draw for the local community, college students, out of towners...I would love for that area to get a feel and look of what has happened around Arizona State. I think Tempe and especially the area around ASU is fun, classy and great during a game and in all off-seasons. I like a mix of urban lounges, sports bars, a steak house, all night diners, coffee houses...Make it a great hang out space all the year long.

Need a little help. I am going to get a hotel room for Friday night before the home opener. Need someplace close to the stadium, preferably a suite, as I will be getting things ready for tailgating and a kitchen will come in handy. Some place nice but not over the top expensive.

Thoughts?

I love the new Best Western up there by the mall. It is a great hotel with a nice free breakfast and huge rooms! It is not too far from the stadium and clean. Not sure if they are sold out or not though.

Thanks. I am hoping you were talking about the Best Western Premier Crown Chase?

Hope so, as I just booked a room. Great reviews.

Emmitt, I'll see you Friday night, but I just can't take the heat on the parking lot :-)

Is this going to happen? I thought they weren't going to open again.

I brought my kids to Denton this June on a visit home. We couldn't find a decent local place to eat that was around when I attended school there in the '80s other than El Matador. We were going to try the hamburger company restaurant on the county square but it was closed.

Every college town needs an eatery with decades of school memorabilia on the walls. What place fills that need in Denton?

The Tomato already reopened - but they opened it in Sanger. It is not returning to Fry.

It was quite the crowd around the Tomato, but oh, how I miss that place. The Tomato and Ricks Place were so awesome.

ya, didn't rick actually burn the place down himself, then try and claim insurance or something like that?

doosu, dollybraid, ugly mustard, baboon...that was THE place for music in denton

'

Rick and Ed sold the place and the new guy (Scott) ran it into the ground and allegedly burned it down. He covered it up by claiming that the floors had just been refinished and that he was in New Mexico when the fire actually went down. Not sure if he ever got in trouble.

Ed went on to open the Curtain Club in Deep Ellum, Rick bought Ed out of the other half of Muthers. Muthers is now The Garage but Rick still owns it.

I wouldn't classify either one as bad people, the bad people are down the road a little bit (just my opinion)

Btw, Ricks was reopened as 'The Inferno' as a play on its previous demise. That owner was the same guy that used to own Karma Kafe. When that didn't work out, the building sat empty for a long time. It just opened back up a year or so ago but it got a complete facelift and their back patio beer garden is really popular. The guys that bought The Tavern from me also just sold and the new blood is keeping the name and really sprucing the place up.

The Tomato was great and is misses but Crooked Crust is pretty darn good pizza. I actually liked TJ's better than The Tomato. Good times.
