Was at the rec this afternoon. I saw Tony Mitchell. He looked good. Then later i came across Johnny Jones with a recruit from Argyle. He realized I recognized him and he came and talked to me. I must say he is one of the nicest guys. He took time to ask my name where I was from and chat with me for a sec. UNT is lucky to have Johnny Jones.

So Tony is allowed to play pickup games with the rest of the team in the rec right? Man I'd love to see that. How did he look against the other guys? Does Tony really stand out against our new HS recruits?

6'5" power forward??

I wouldn't overanalyze it. He's a 6'5" kid playing for a 3-A school that's 92% white and 7% hispanic. Ollie from "Hoosiers" would probably line up as a 4 for them.

If he's got post moves and can play physical defense, that's a bonus... Assuming he's also got the skills to play on the perimeter. And if JJ is taking the time to chat him up on a visit, then he's probably got something going for him.

UALR has a guy coming in that's 6'10", but played point guard until he was a sophomore in high school. Had an explosive growth spurt, so now he's a center who can pass and handle the ball like a 1. I have a feeling we're going to get a painful lesson in the value of an oddball skill set when we play them.

Here's Overlander's highlight reel from his AAU team (Texas Assault; plays with the FM Marcus triplets: Smart/Forte/Banyard).

Looks like he can move with the ball, drive, and score from the 3 point line. And his reel calls him a Small Forward... He seems to realize that his potential D1 college future isn't in the paint.

Mgfan: Before we put up a thread on him in the recruiting forum, take another look at the photos on his Rivals and Facebook page. If you're pretty sure that's the guy you saw, please confirm.

He's pretty good but definately a walk on candidate at UNT. (or some other mid-major) Texas Assault won the Addidas 64 National Tournament about 2 weeks ago in Vegas. I get him confused with a kid from North Crowley. Anyway, he was a major contributor but not on the level of Smart, Forte or Nick Banyard. Argyle had a black kid about 6-6 that play with the Dickerson kid that's at Western Kentucky. He played Juco ball last year at Collin County or some other Dallas area Juco. He'd be a good addition.

Banyard would be a good fit at UNT, though it's wouldn't be our greatest need position.

As always, thanks for your insights.

Saw your comment in the Connor Lammert thread... I was shocked that Phil Forte got an offer from Kansas. Any thoughts on that one?

did the selwyn gym get rid of the carpet floor?

i hope anyone that played denton city-league elementary bball during the 80's appreciates that. heaven help your team if your coach didnt reserve half of one of the smelly calhoun gym's that week. i think my knee caps still have some small scars from the burns.

I'm hoping I get to meet JJ when the team is in LA, however unlikely that is.

Not too unlikely with a little effort. Johnny's very approachable and if you're wearing green he may seek you out.

I played many games on the wonderful floors of Congress Jr. High's stately gymnasiums, Mount's Street Gym & Denton Street Gym, during elementary and Jr. High. Talk about home court advantage, the Mounts Street gym floor had numerous dead spots that would cause one to lose their dribble since the ball woundn't rebound properly. We would use this to our advantage when playing out of town teams and had set defensive plays that would funnel the opposing team to the spot. We would either steal the ball or they would turn the ball over after moving across that spot.

Those two gyms are now long gone, but great memories. Never played on the carpet at Selwyn.

So, Tasty...are you saying white guys can't play basketball? Hmmmmmmmmm...if JJ is at all interested I think I'd be leaving the evaluation up to him...or is it just Class 3A white guys who play at schools with very few Hispanics? I'm confused? I suppose if he were Greek your opinion would be different? :notfair::rolleyes: Just teasin' you a little....

about 7 years ago i visited the mounts & mccallister gym's at calhoun. they still smelled awful but for some reason the stench is nowhere near as overpowering as stricklands gym/bathroom.

please don't ask why i was somewhat recently in a middle school boys locker room... if you had the opportunity, i'm sure you would visit too.
