1998 UT vs UNT Game

Recommended Posts

So Harry mentioned the 1988 UNT-UT game and how disappointing that was that the corrupt refs were not going to allow a victory to happen. I had to go watch the video again and felt the need to share for those that haven't seen it. This would have been our greatest victory of all time IMO even though UT had a terrible year that year going just 4-7. WE would have capped off a great season at 10-2 if we had won.

At the end, the announcer says 2 plays went against North Texas. Struggling to remember the other. Anyone?

A good friend and UT ex who was well connected at with the program there told me this later on. He said that when one of the refs was asked about the call, the ref winked and said that Cash was in the end zone by this much.....as he made a hook-em sign!

I call BS on this statement. Refs that are alums are not allowed to ref his alma maters game. This was the game that brought me to NT from junior college. I started looking into the Journalism program and discovered it was onr of the best in the Sourhwest.

... even though UT had a terrible year that year going just 4-7.

UT wasn't very good that year, but it always feels good to beat them.

UH beating UT in 1988 was my favorite road trip as a student. In what has become known as the Parents' Day Massacre, UH won 66-15. At the time, that was UT's worst loss since 1904 (still their 4th worst loss) and it is still the worst home loss in UT history.

In Andre Ware's first start, on top of 66 points, UH had 619 total yards and 412 passing yards. Jason Phillips had 11 catches for 171 yards and 4 TDs. Chuck Weatherspoon had 218 yards rushing and 1 TD on only 11 carries.

I really miss those days.

BTW: UH fans can relate to getting screwed by refs against UT, most notably in the 20-20 tie in 1968 on the night UT unveiled the Wishbone. With 3 minutes to go, Paul Gipson dove into the end zone on 4th and inches, but somehow the refs say he didn't gain any ground. Damn refs. UT goes 9-1-1 and a #3 ranking with a Cotton Bowl win. UH goes 6-2-2 and #18 with no bowl.

I was standing in the endzone directly above where Cash caught that ball, and the previous call on the other side of the endzone was MUCH worse. I don't remember who caught the first ball, but he appeared to be a yard or more out of bounds when he caught it. Total and complete obvious cheat, and that ref would likely be fired if he tried that these days, because if I remember correctly, he had a totally clear and open view of the play. Even my UT friend started laughing and rolling his eyes on that one.

FFR has a tape of that game, he can tell the whole story. I was also at that game and from what I remember there were a bunch of terrible calls. I think something happened on a kick that I cant quite recall, I think that might have been the worst call, I just cant remember what it was. In fact I think that UT's first penalty of the game came late in the 4th. Hopefully Rick will see this thread and he can chime in and refresh my old brain.

It's not BS and Jim was very well connected to the program and he wasn't one to tell tall tales.

B.S. It will never be time to let it go. We will never forget.

Some of us remember the shaft we got in Arkansas in I think 1969 or 1970 when

Ron Shanklin caught a supposidly game winning T.D. pass on 4th down and a Southwest

Conference Referee called it a trap. And we lost by two points. Maybe someone else

remembers that.

It really is time to let go....

Yes, I agree... even though many of us were there... and experienced it... but someone had to ask... again...

These three plays (two angles each play) are the three main plays that were highly questioned during and after the game. Enjoy.

Yup, that's the three worst plays. By the way gruu, that angle on the fumble is the best I have ever seen, as it isn't shown in my personal copy of that game, which was recorded live. We had just taken a 14 point lead, and would have had the ball again on their end of the field had the refs not given the ball back. And it's hard to tell in the above video but in the first TD catch the receiver never brings the ball in under control and it bounces away out of the view of the camera after he hits the ground.

There were several other questionable calls, or non calls that show the extreme bias in this game, one particular I remember in which Marcus Camper catches the ball for a first down then gets hit a couple of yards out of bounds with no call. It's very obvious that the officiating crew was under pressure to get things corrected. Otherwise how would it have looked for the wealthiest program in the nation to have lost at home to one of the poorest in the state who was also playing with 20 fewer scholarships?

What I appreciated when it was over was how the Austin and DFW media gave NT the respect it had earned that night. Later in 1991 the AAS would go so far as to resurrect this game as one that was stolen from us. It was great to be Mean Green in 1988.
