While going through stuff in preparation of a move, I came across a mimeographed (remember that?) "cheer sheet" which must have come from either the 71 or 72 season.

Here they are:

1. Chewing gum, chewing gum

stick it on the wall...

Soft hard sticky gooey

Get that Ball!!!

2. Bricka Braka Firecracker

sis boom bah!

Bugs Bunny, Bugs Bunny

Rah Rah Rah!

3.Enchilada Guacamole

tortilla team...

Hot Sauce, Hot Sauce

Go Mean Bean!

and my favorite....

4. Football, Football

A very good game

But with NT...

It Ain't the Same!!!

I think times have changed.

Times have changed indeed sir!

Can you imagine the second one establishing itself as a tradition and being passed down from generation to generation, being the first cheer in the new stadium with 30,000 fans screaming "...Bugs Bunny, Bugs Bunnny. Rah, Rah, Rah!"

Call me old fashioned but I really like all of those old time cheers. Some universities have their own versions of them and they are still used today. TCU comes to mind.

Yep, here's their stupid yell...which they still require their students to learn.

Riff, Ram, Bah Zoo

Lickety, Lickety, Zoo, Zoo

Who, Wah, Wah, Who

Give ‘em Hell, TCU.

Here is a story in their student paper about their traditions. I've never seen anything in the Daily about ours.

If the NT Daily ran a story on a "tradition" at North Texas, it would either a.)say the tradition is stupid, b.)get the tradition wrong, c.)talk about how much better the similar tradition is at Texas or another school, or d.)bitch about the cost of the football program that said tradition belongs to.

I remember a cheer from the first game I ever attended at NT. I was a new grad student and sat on the student side, where I heard:.

" Gimmee a Q! Crowd: Q!

Gimmee another Q! Q!

Gimmee another Q! Q!

Gimmee ANOTHER Q! Q!

Whats that SPELL? Four Q!! "

Truth.

And then there is the "official" North Texas yell, published on the first page of the 1915 YUCCA.

Here is the link.

It wouldn't take much to "modernize" this cheer i.e substitute U.N.T for T.N.C. At least we won't have cheerleaders dressed like orderlies from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Or are they actually the inmates....hmmm? Perhap I digress?

I grew up in Brownwood in the 60's and these two yells sometime were yelled by the student-body/band... not the cheerleaders..

Looking back they were a bit mean but we were 18 and were winning states titles in football.

Watermelon, watermelon, watermelon rind--

Look on the scoreboard and see who is behind--.

YOU..!!!

__________

We ain't cruel , we ain't mean--

We will give a yell for the other team--

HELP.!!

In those years cheerleaders were more cheerleaders than gymnastic performers..

A lot of cheers had something to do with what was going on on the field such as:

First and ten...do it again!! (repeated)

Credit the band with a lot of opponent's penalities... when the other team had the ball in front of the band.. they played LOUD..

There were several times the team jumped offsides because they just couldn't hear well.

It was no accident... the band/cheerleaders/student body knew what it was doing.

Gee, much like some of the posters on this board it seems. Where is that wrinkled $100 bill when you need one? :jig:

Historically speaking, there are a lot of them at the NT Daily's offices. If you disagree, I think there is ample evidence over the DECADES to back my point up rather easily.

Actually, I am agreeing with you....don't think you caught my drift.
