Big question...does Dallas even get by Portland and out of the first round? I am not that big of a pro basketball fan to know how the match-up really looks. But, Portland fans seem very happy to have drawn Dallas. What say the hardcore pro fans here on the board?

The Mavs can beat anybody (except the referees) if they play defense and Dirk gets some help. Every game I watch I get less and less interested in the NBA due to the officiating. I think Pro Wrestling is more of a sport at this point.

Read this book and you will understand why I will always refer to this form of entertainment as the NBE. It hasn't been basketball in a long time.

I could give a crap about this post-season.

It's still a lot more fun to watch than college basketball

Like hell it is.

When you're a graduate of one of (at least) 347 schools across the country... Pro basketball is "better" than college basketball in the same way that watching porn is better than having sex.

Sorry, but outside of UNT I could careless about college basketball. The offenses are boring, there are no true super stars, and they have the most meaningless regular season in all of sports.

I prefer college offense to pro offenses (usually in the pros it devolves into some dude going 1 on 1 with a defender in the last 8 seconds of the shot clock). True super stars? I'd say coaches are the stars in the college game, because players are their 4 years max. Some people like that, others don't - we'd never see eye to eye there. The NHL or NBA have the most meaningless regular seasons - especially the NHL. I love the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but you routinely get seeds in the 6-8 range winning their conference. The NBA seemingly has teams taking whole months off in the 82 game grind.

Even accounting for all the upsets (which makes the tournament such a spectacle) With 347 schools, the NCAA Tournament is nearly always won by a 1 or 2 seed. The regular season is damn important.

Frankly, I only casually follow the NBA or the NHL until their respective playoffs. Whereas I follow college basketball nearly year round.

Which is pretty much the exact opposite of the rest of the country. People don't care or follow college basketball's regular season because a team could lose every single game, but when their conference tourney and get into the Big Dance. The regular season in college basketball quite literally is worthless, which is the reason no one cares about it. UCONN finished the season in NINTH PLACE in the Big East, but still won the national championship. Doesn't seem like their regular season meant much...

If college basketball wants to add some relevancy to their season they need to make it to where only the top half of each conference is eligible for the conference tournament.

I bet more people watch regular season college basketball than regular season hockey. I'm nearly certain that is the case.

Connecticut won their league tournament, so they deserved to be in the Dance. But even if they didn't - 9th place in the Big East this year meant they were in the top 25 at the end of the regular season. They'd have been in anyways (just not with a 3 seed). The BE just had that kind of reputation. It's not like they were even 9th place in the ACC (generally the league that jockeys back and forth with the BE for supremacy). Besides, with a league with THAT many teams, it's basically impossible to go strictly by their conference records. They play just a few schools more than once....that conference is beyond unwieldy. It'll be even worse once TCU joins.

To the other point, it's up to the leagues themselves on how they want to hold their tournaments. The Ivy doesn't even have one. Some give the top seeds multiple byes. I believe one only has the top 4 teams even invited. If you wanna blame somebody for the fact that everyone has a shot, blame the Commissioners and league offices who could come up with streamlined tournaments, or do away with them completely. The only league (okay, among the old established conferences) who has always had one to determine their champ is the ACC. Everyone else just copied.

And again....look at the seeds that have won the title. It is almost always a 1 or a 2. Regular season counts big time. Off the top of my head these are the seeds that have won the title the last 20 years. I'd go back further, but my memory gets hazy after that. I know NC State was a 6, Kansas was a 6, and Nova was an 8 --- but otherwise I think the seeds are pretty in line with the last 20 years.

2005 - 1 UNC

2004 - 2 Connecticut

Any die hard NBA fan I know (very few, right now) does not give a flip about college sports, with the exception of their own team. Even at that, they are casual followers.

IMIO, it takes a weird breed to like the NBA now-a-days.

I haven't really been much of a fan since Wade came into the league (not hating Dwayne, just providing a time frame). I just don't know about the refs, and - like the NFL - the offenses all look the same.

How can any regular season be any more meaningless than the NBA (except maybe the NHL's) when just about everyone makes the playoffs? Pro basketball has become a "sport of stars" where the rules of basketball do not apply to certain people. Pro basketball is doing a good bit to ruin the sport of basketball. But, to each his/her own. I guess that's why there are so many different sports. For me, nothing as great as the college game. No way does the pro game (in any sport) compare to the relationship one has with their college team.

I agree with you on football & basketball Kram. Not on board with hockey (probably because so few schools have teams, and even fewer games are televised) or baseball because of the aluminum bats.

#1: We are talking pro sports here;

#2: If you are going to change my statements, please note the fact that you have done so. Some may think, based on your post that I actually wrote the part about NCAA football, and

#3: If we were talking about college sports, I could probably agree with you on the bowl game thing.

WOW! What a collapse last evening by the Mavs. I have to say that Jason Kidd losing the ball to a turnover with the Mavs trying to hang on late, sure reminded me of Josh White's late turnover in the SBC Tourney Championship. My bride, who rarely remembers anything like this, was the one to point it out to me...man, she was in the "dog house" all evening after that comment, but it was eerily similar and came at a very crucial time.

I simply cannot believe a professional team...any professional team...in the playoffs would blow a 23 point lead like the Mavs did last night.

So, question...are the Mavs done? And are they on the verge of another one and done in playoffs? What's up with these guys when the playoffs come around?

OUCH! Painful...very painful.

Not done, but reality is setting in:

Trailblazers present match up problems very specific for the Mavs, the guards more so than, really, any other team they face.

Historically, Mavs don't do well on the road. Aaaaaand, they are VERY bad in Portland.

On the flip side, I don't see that kind of collapse happening in Dallas. Portland is going to have to win one in Dallas to take this thing.
