Great News on Johnny and staffs raise and totally deserved! I concur that it is SO refreshing to see us move up in the compensation rankings. It shows a commitment from the top that hasn't been there in the past. GMG!

Great news for JJ and his team. Well deserved, well earned. UNT is making some increased financial commitments to its coaching staff these days, and that say a good deal about what the university thinks can happen with the entire athletic program in relation to the university itself...what it can do to help attract students, donors, active alums, etc. It seems that so many good things are happening at UNT these days that it is kind of hard to keep up with it all. Man, there just does not seem to have been a better time to be a member of the Mean green nation...BUT....

OK, you know where I am going with this, right?

It is also time that the members of the Mean Green Nation step up and support the program as well. While Mean green Club new membership applications and membership renewals are off to a very nice start this year, the support is no where near what is needed to help support our scholarship athletes. EACH and every dollar raised through the Mean Green Club relieves the athletic dept. budget of that $1.00 it would have had to use to pay for student scholarships. As members of the great Mean green nation our goal should be that Mean Green Club memberships fund all athletic scholarships at UNT 100%.

I am very proud to be a member of the Mean Green Club and proud that I was able to raise my contribution level this year a small amount, but I am even more proud of being able to get to know so many other long time Mean Green Club members and many who have just recently joined. UNT needs you, me and every other supporter more now than ever. If you are not a member of the Mean Green Club, PM me and I'll get you any information you need. Never before has the time been better to support the Mean Green. I am 100% certain that the support I provide will be returned to me many times over in the enjoyment and pride I get from knowing that I am supporting our student athletes and that the small amount that I can give is actually doing some good.

The Mean Green is fast getting away from being a "beer budget program" and it is moving toward being in the "champagne budget" realm. Can you help? Will you help? Any amount...large or small is a BIG deal to UNT. It would be both appreciated and very much needed.

And with that, I will leave you with...GREAT things are happening at UNT these days...& GO MEAN GREEN!

Many thanks...RV!!! Maybe you've been reading my JJ salary rants on the BB board. Thanks to you, UNT administration, and the BOR for "PONYING UP" the "BUCKS" for the UNT athletic staff that has consistently produced for the past several years. Now all the other coaches know that if UNT becomes a "Winner" in their particular disciplines then they'll be duly compensated for their successful, and winning efforts at UNT.

Even though UNT has renegotiated JJ (and I assume his staff's) compensation before, UNT has now done what is necessary to show all parties UNT's commitment to their success. When the next school comes calling, and they will, UNT will be able to say the University has put it's best foot forward to retain our current staff. :thumbsu::goodjob::bow:

Curious. Where does this put us in the belt and other smaller conferences on our coaches pay scale? Football coach, and mens and womans basketball coach.

Just looking at base salaries:

Johnny Jones (UNT) - $450,000

Isiah Thomas (FIU) - $258,000

Ronnie Arrow (USA) - ~$210,000 (can't find exact number)

Bob Marlin (ULL)- ~$200,000 (can't find exact number)

Steve Shields (UALR) - $183,843

Mike Jarvis (FAU) - $175,000

Kermit Davis (MTSU) - $160,480

Ken McDonald (WKU) - $150,000 (after $100,000 pay cut in new contract, ouch  )

John Brady (ASU) - $131,000

Keith Richard (ULM) - (can't find it)

Don Maestri (Troy) - (can't find it)

Of Note:

Steve Fisher (SDSU) - $258,620

Brad Stevens (Butler) - $434,382

Shaka Smart (VCU) - $418,000

Brooks Thompson (UTSA) - $126,740

Stew Morrill (Utah State) - $551,444

I think Shaka Smart just got a raise to around a million a year. And I thought Brad Stevens made about 750K.

Going by the link on "Of Note:" from USA Today. It was last updated on 3/30. I didn't know that Smart had been increased to $1.2m base. For Stevens, the $750k is total pay vs. base pay of $434k. Total pay is too hard to work with because there are way too many variables.

I may be the lone fan who doesn't like the Jones deal if it is as reported. I have no issue with paying Jones that much or even more, but I do not like one sided long term contracts for coaches. Seven years is almost insane in my mind. I don't think it will happen but what happens if Jones loses his touch and starts to field noncompetitive teams. NT will face a huge buyout if it wants to make a change and in my mind gains little by having Jones or any other coach on a long term contract. If LSU or any other major wants Jones, does anyone really think that contract makes any difference?

I'm still stunned we doubled his salary and gave him seven more years. I haven't decided if I like the deal or not GrandGreen. The length of the deal is a bit shocking.
