Our student section alone would be over 1,000. Also we have far more vocal fans than SMU. A thousand Ponies makes for a very quiet building.

We have taken the kids a few times to support Collin Mangrum and when I yell/cheer, people turn around and look at me weird like something's wrong with me. Last game I attended, the family in front of me actually left and sat on the other side of the coliseum (of course, I could see them b/c there were so few people there.) The friends with the Mangrum family patted me on the back and said, 'we're glad you're sitting with us. Why did they come to a game if they didn't think people were going to cheer?'

It is definitely a sad spectacle to attend the SMU games. We went to one game where a few frats sat together and yelled and cheered, but then, most of them left before the game was over. It isn't like there is a mad traffic rush to beat, either.

But, then again, our voices ring loud across the entire arena. Great acoustics when it's empty. I took my daughter last Saturday and we went to Twisted Root after the game. A handful of SMU students walked by us and said "Go Ponies! We saw you at the game!" I laughed and said "you probably heard me at the game!" They cracked up and said "yeah, everyone heard you!"

*shrug* I miss Mean Green basketball, but do enjoy supporting the Mangrums. (I know most of you are going to consider me a traitor. But, be kind. I did NOT buy any SMU gear and our middle son usually wears a UNT shirt to the game, as a matter of principle.)

AOM, I am sad to report that I have elicited a similar reaction from some fans in my section at Fouts...seemingly a study hall on some game days in the past...I hope the new stadium with seats within the same zip code as the field will change the crowd participation a bit.

On the other side, seeing Brand X advance this far makes me wonder if we shouldn't be interested in participating. Think of it as a minor bowl, giving our team extra weeks of practice. This year, with the injuries and limited depth, maybe not, but I would be inclined to consider an opportunity like this in the future.

I would agree we should participate with a young team that would benefit from the extra practice and game experience. This year though I don't think our senior filled team would have their hearts in it.

Are you working under the assumption that games would be free to students?
