Basketball: Boxell moving on to Lubbock

Former Ponder star point guard Lance Boxell, who spent his freshman year as a walk-on at North Texas, has accepted a scholarship to Lubbock Christian University.

Boxell, who led the Lions to a Class 2A state title as a junior, played in 11 games for the Mean Green last season. He recorded eight points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists in 94 total minutes of playing time for UNT.

Boxell will finish the spring semester at UNT and enroll at Lubbock Christian, an NAIA school, in the fall.

"I went down there and liked playing with the guys and got a full ride, which was a big factor," Boxell said. "I thought I could get more playing time there. That was also one of the reasons for the decision."

UNT coach Johnny Jones said he appreciated Boxell’s hard work while he was a member of the Mean Green.

"We’re going to miss Lance as a player and a person," Jones said. "But we’re excited that somebody had a chance to see him and liked him enough to offer him a scholarship, which we weren’t in a position to do. We’re extremely happy for him, but at the same time we hate to see him go."

Boxell and his father, Ponder coach Doug Boxell, both said they appreciated the opportunity he was given at UNT. They also said Jones and his staff were sup-portive of Lance’s decision to accept the scholarship to Lubbock Christian.

"The North Texas people were super," Doug Boxell said. "North Texas was a great place for him, and we loved him being there. I was kind of hoping he’d stay there because of the convenience, but I think he just wanted to be able to play more."

I liked his game and thought he could develop into a good player for us. His father obviously coached him well. We wish him the best but I wish he was still wearing green.
