This is good news for the team. I had head that up to 8 players were thinking of leaving the team if Coach Stephens remained the HC. Like Matt said...every time I spoke with Coach Stephens she was very nice, but she was definitely in over her head with he first HC job here at UNT. I wish her well and hope that her experience here will be a learning one for her in her next job. BUT, this is a move that really did need to be made at this time and RV once again stepped up and did what he had to do for the players on the team and for the athletic program at UNT.

Thank you RV. I wish Coach Stephens well, and I am now anxious to see who UNT gets to be the next HC. If it is anywhere near as good as the selection of Dan McCarney and Coach Chico to lead the football program we are in for a real positive move for the ladies! WOW...great news. It';s a great GREEN DAY at UNT. Time to celebrate the green.

By this I do not mean to dance on Coach Stephens misfortune, but I am very excited to see that the ladies will be getting a new HC and can move forward from here.....GO MEAN GREEN! GREAT NEWS!

That is good to know, but nonetheless it was on RV's watch. Wish Stephens luck as well and hope UNT can get it right this time.

This is another case, of a coach firing themselves. She accomplished nothing but discord on the team. I am happily surprised that NT ponied up the money to buy out a WBB coach for two years. Yes, she was an awful hire, but at least they didn't wait any longer to make a change. I really wish they had done the same to Trilli.

I would tap the brakes a little of all the Capps talk, yes she was very successful at UTA but she did get fired at UTA and hasn't been exactly a hot commodity on the woman's basketball circuit.

All these comments about RV not being responsible for the Stephens hire, are confusing. RV made the hire and is responsible. The alternate that he was directed to hire an inferior coach and did so is a far worse allegation IMO then just making a hire that didn't turn out.

I look forward to another good hire by RV. Stephens was bad and he was lucky to survive the Dodge hire, but he has got some good to excellent hcs for the minor sports and McCarney should be a big winner.

If RV and Rowlins will spend the money, and Van still wants to coach, here is my choice for the next Woman's coach. He just stepped down at LSU.

Hard to get excited about a 70 year old coach.

Wouldn't it be ironic if North Texas hired the Coach away from LSU ? I know, I know, he stepped down, but some how, we hired away the LSU Coach.

Back before they all had nothing to do with the Stephens' hire:

http://www.dentonrc....8.74c87134.html

Dang, I've heard the two page resume has gained acceptance, but this makes me see why some organizations have a "no resume" policy:

Every detail of Stephens’ plan was spelled out in “Destined for Excellence: Path to Success for the University of North Texas Women’s Basketball Program.”

The 29-page binder that included 16 sections separated by tabs included her practice plan, coaching philosophy, recruiting strategy, and thoughts on the best path to academic success for the Mean Green, not to mention her resume.

Lined up neatly along the top of the full-color cover were pictures of members of last season’s UNT squad. Those attributes were all bound in a neat and organized package, one that convinced UNT officials that Stephens is ready for the challenge she is about to take on at UNT.

After taking a quick look at the binder, it’s hard to disagree.

“It’s a work in progress,” Stephens said of her book, one she does not plan on using again — at least not as a resume. “I won’t need it again. Ever.”

CAPPS RESIGNS AS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH

April 9, 2007

UT Arlington announced Donna Capps has resigned as the head women's basketball coach to accept an administrative position with the Mesquite (Texas) Independent School District Monday.

Capps was named the 2007 Southland Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Mavs to their first outright conference title and to the team's second NCAA Tournament appearance in three seasons. The Mavericks' 24-9 record set a school and conference record for consecutive wins with 19.

I remember the Startlegram reporting earlier that year that she was asked to fire an assistant by their AD, and she either refused or reluctantly did, can't remember which? Then goes on a 19-0 conference win streak and a second trip to the NCAA's then walks away as the top up and coming women's college basketball coach in Texas. A year later she was on our front door step only to be turned away for an unproven commodity that had never been a head college basketball coach in her life.

I'm beginning to think that Johnny Jones was just a fluke hire.

Even JJ struggled for a couple of years and was coming under fire on this board. He had that "something" that inspired the patience necessary to allow him to build his program. SS did not display that "something". To her credit, she obviously had the knowledge to build a great strategic plan...she just wasn't able to execute the plan.

Maybe her plan just sucked.

hiring is like medicine; its not an exact science. the only people who have never made a hiring error are those who have never hired anyone. it appears to me that before the student fee passed and dr. rawlings came on board we were forced to hire unproven assistant coaches because thats all we could afford. granted, some assistants become excellect head coaches, but there is always a greater risk in hiring them.[like taking a successful salesman and promoting them to sales manager]. i would expect us to draw from a pool of experienced head coaches, but would be happy with an assistant hire from a proven program such as baylor for example. just a old man's opinion.

OK, it sucked. It sucked in everyone in the room making the hiring decision! :P

I usually don't get to jazzed about women's basketball, but it is nice to see UNT acting like a major university and buying out the contract of a coach that has horribly underperformed.

Hopefully, the days of acting like a small time college are behind us.

In general, I tend to agree with you about the riskiness of hiring. However, to use your example you wouldn't hire someone who has been selling cars all their life and expect them to be immediately successful (if at all) in selling medical equipment.

I keep saying this......we are not (culturally) like everyone else. The people in charge of hiring here have never understood that.

To use a mental health analogy; you don't want to hire a mental health professional who's only experience has been with garden variety neurotics, to treat a client who's been clinically depressed most of their life.

This was NOT RV's hire. He was pressured to make this hire by then President Batille. Coach V had another candidate ready to select, but was told "no" and that he needed to make this hire!

Praise in public, criticize in private.

Look, I was wrong. You mofos should screenshot it and put it in your Sig line. Maybe start a thread on it. Maybe a poll to see if I was really wrong or not.

There is plenty worse from KRAM out there. What he and Fly do is criticize very publicly, but only after that person has severed ties with UNT, and usually to blame those people for RV's failures.

And don't fool yourself, there is zero criticism in private.

Well....that did take some digging, but the criticism, if you really call it that,  is not that damning considering what is going on with the usual suspects these days.  Is wishing a vanquished coach well and referencing what someone else had said in another post criticizing?  If so...guilty as charged.  But, at least it was adult and cordial to a degree.  Perhaps others here should learn to "criticize" as such.  Just saying.....

Dude. There is MUCH worse from you on Bataille. I'm not going to drudge it up by pulling up an old thread. The point is be consistent. You aren't criticizing only in private. You are doing it very publicly once people leave.

So, it's "Dude" now?   Too funny.  I guess that is better than what you and your now, guy pal, usually call people.

Wasn't Bataille gone when most of those posts  were made?  Never a secret that I thought she was bad for UNT.  We know that to be very true now...in hindsight of course.    Some of us knew it at the time.  But, unlike some here, I never quit giving just because I thought an administrator was a bad choice for UNT.  I did what I could to support MY university knowing full well that she would be gone before I was.  Others here might like to take a lesson from that course of action....unless they prefer just to talk a good game about supporting UNT..  Talk, of course, is very cheap...and worth about the same.

Give me a date when Rick Villarreal will be gone. He is riding this gravy train of a job to the bitter bitter bitter end. State pension is what he is after and no doubt believes he is owed. That's another 5 years of failure. You wanna hang around for that, be my guest. You and 17 others will have a blast.

Now, just how could I, a lowly peon outside the 17, as you have so rightly acknowledged, have any info on that.  But, I will " hang around" until they pry my cold dead fingers off my latest UNT sweater vest no matter who the coaches are, the AD is or who the university president happens to be.  I didn't leave or cut my donations when we had, in my opinion, our worst president in recent history.  But, of course you don't care.

But, you don't care....you have stated as such on many an occasion.  It cannot be criticism...public or private...to just repeat what you yourself have said publicly and privately on so so many occasions.   So, paraphrasing your own oft spoken words...you don't care.  Just supporting your position.  You know, if you really wanted to "not care", you could just walk away as you encourage others to do.  You know, you were a much more positive and fun guy when Wendy was around.  Question...no answer.
