The banner ad for Metzler's as "Texas Tastiest" Barbeque has me wondering. What are your top 5? Outside of my house here is the countdown of the places with the best BBQ in Texas:

5) Clark's Outpost - Tioga

4) Black's BBQ - Lockhart

3) Smitty's - Lockhart

2) The Salt Lick - Driftwood

1) City Market - Luling

The Salt Lick in Driftwood is the only BBQ I've had in Texas that I'd brag about. I'll have to check out the others you listed. I can't figure out why DFW BBQ sucks, I know we're "known" for crappy BBQ, but WHY??

If you're ever up Bridgeport way, you owe it to yourself to stop in at Raymond's BBQ. If you're not overly hungry have the hot and spicy BBQ Frito Pie. BBQ stuffed Baked Potato is badass as well. Its all very solid.

Never been to Clark's Outpost, but you are dead on with Blacks, Smitty's, Slat Lick, and City Market. Been to them all. There's also a BBQ run by a Baptist Church in Huntsville, Tx that is excellent, or so I have been told. If you're into pork ribs, check out The Country Tavern near Kilgore. The place is known as "The Holy Grail For Ribs" by most BBQ rib junkies.

In DFW, I would suggest Angelo's or Railhead in Fort Worth. Best cold beer in Fort Worth. Cooper's in the Stockyards is good, but you can get carried away at the pit, so it gets expensive pretty fast. Still good bbq, and a fun place to take folks from out of state.

Blackburn's is good, but the places to go in Lockhart are Smitty's and Kreuz Market. And Cooper's in Llano is great to!

Well, Metzler's does have an excellent sliced brisket sandwich. Get some beef battered onion rings to go with that. And I still love North Euless Main Barbeque right here in Euless. People come here from all over the DFW area for it, so they must be doing something right. And yeah, some say that Angelo's ribs are better than North Euless Main's; maybe so, I just haven't been there.

I'll repeat what my father told me long ago...

"BBQ is like women, all are good, some are just better than others"...and as a follow up..."it is as much a personal preference as anything else that has to do with anything else". Greatness he was!

I agree with Mark, above, but from your list, I'm down with Smitty's and City Market.

Another place my wife and I stop in when we get the chance is Shoepf's in Belton. It's right off I35, and their setup is much like Cooper's in the Stockyards and Llano. Yum.

I still haven't made it to Kruez's but from what I've heard it may be the top of the Lockhart trinity of BBQ. I'm also anxious to try Snow's in Lexington. Texas Monthly ranked them #1 in Texas. Problem is they only open on Saturdays. People start lining up before 8:00am and they are usually sold out by 10:00AM

That's the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church. I haven't been there, but I hear they have incredible BBQ. From what I understand, the church runs the BBQ stand, right on the grounds of the church. I found a video on youtube (you can find a video about everything these days):

Located off of Exit 114 on I45 in Huntsville

I stopped at a place in Lampasas...Fire House(?)...pretty good. Always been a fan on Franklin's in Austin

Franklin's is veeeery solid. As is Ironworks.

City Meat Market in Giddings is pretty good.

Cooper's in Llano

Goode Company in Houston has the best Pecan Pie.

Salt Lick is an experience unto itself, but after living down that way, I grew bored of it with a certain quickness.

Other thoughts:

I miss Steve's in Denton.

Rudy's is Texas' most overrated BBQ joint. Mediocrity at its best!

Only one choice! Almost had them in Grand Prairie. Scott Roberts and "The Salt Lick" in Driftwood, Texas. Also, at Choctaw Casino and Round Rock and Station Casinos in Las Vegas.

Best Golf Course BBQ: Eddlemon's BBQ at Prairie Lakes Golf Course in Grand Prairie

Best Denton BBQ: Metzler's

Rudy's is ok for a chain. But saying your are going to Rudy's for good barbeque is like saying you go to McDonald's for a good hamburger.

Are you referring to Kemp-Fire BBQ in Kempner ? It's between Lampasas and Copperas Cove on 190 at the fire station (such that it is) in Kempner, a small one-blinking-light town.

If so, I'll agree that it is excellent.

I do like me some Elgin Hot Sausage (but only from Southside Mkt), however the rest of their stuff is meh.

Never had any better than Bodacious BBQ in Mount Pleasant. I've been to other Bodaciouses, but none quite measures up to Bobby Adams' place in Mount Pleasant.

Agreed on Bodacious in general, don't think I've ever had the Mt Pleasant location. Its what my grandmother always gets when we come visit in Longview.

Does she ever take you to The Butcher Shop for burgers. Mmmm. Also, Juicy's is pretty dang good too.

Hard Eight BBQ in Stephenville is quite tasty. I've had them cater several things, and the BBQ is FANTASTIC.

*Disclaimer: The BBQ does seem to be better when catered then when eating at the restaurant itself. I have also not eaten at the Coppell location.

Hammonds BBQ in Glen Rose is also very good.

Bodacious BBQ in Longview is a great choice. Ribs just the way I like 'em!

I'm tired of Rudy's. Use to enjoy eating at the one in College Station, but some of the newer locations suck.

There is a great place in Henderson that made the Texas Monthly Top 50. Great ribs! Tom's BBQ? I highly recommend the place.

Oh, and if you are ever in Waco, Vitek's BBQ is awesome. The Gut Pack is something everyone should experience at least once in there lifetime.

Family own business that has been in operation since the 30s 1915. Daughter runs the business, Dad runs the BBQ.

Sammy's in Dallas has very good smoked sausage and a great side dish, baked-potato casserole.

Underwood's has outstanding BBQ sauce and amazingly tender BBQ beefsteak. Also some of the greatest rolls I've ever had. Unfortunately, there is only one Underwood's remaining, in Brownwood. Made the drive down on a Saturday last summer for lunch and a load of take-out (which made the journey back to Dallas in my Mean Green soft-side cooler.)
