The current issue of The Sporting News (Feb. 28 issue) has their off-season assessment of every FBS team. Here's what they say about Mean Green football:

"With new Coach Dan McCarney on board, bet on the Mean Green's defensive line to make major improvements in a hurry.

Staff changes mean this program might have the best long-term forecast in the league."

+1, and a good find SUMG! What a lot of people, including some GMG.com members, don't realize is that coach McCarney has credibility developing DL players, and will be as involved as he feels is necessary to improve that aspect of our football team.

The cupboard is not bare, we have carryover coaches in key positions ( Canales and Nelson), players can be reshaped by new strength coach, and returning players can be "coached up" by a more experienced and confident staff. These facts will equate to being bowl eligible in Coach Mac's first year. Move over SBC the Mean Green is back!!!!!!

I find it hard to believe that a Mac would keep Nelson! Pure and simple a nostalgia and loyalty play! The D-line for all its talent, was truly an under-performing unit. Does Nelson think he's the only D-line coach in the college and pro ranks that is right to not let D-line guys put their hands up on a pass play? That was a 70s pass rush philosophy!

Or maybe Mac knows his Dlineman, and he likes to think (whether you agree with it or not) that Nelson didn't have anything to work with.

If that's the case, we will be lucky to win 3 games this year.

So, they don't put their hands up?
