Segal Signs Outfielder, Catcher To Softball Letters

DENTON (4/17/03) – North Texas head softball coach Stacey Segal has announced the signing of two more players to National Letters of Intent. Catcher Sonia Medina and outfielder Stephanie Cranmer will join the Mean Green Softball as they begin play during the 2003-2004 season.

Medina was a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American at Phoenix College in Phoenix, Ariz. in 2002. As a freshman, Medina hit .479, had an on base percentage of .505 and was 33/36 in stolen bases attempts. Medina was selected as the Phoenix College MVP, second team all-conference, first team all-region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, first team All-American –NJCAA, second team All-American – NFCA, and help led her team to a fourth place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. In 2002, Medina was selected a as member of the NJCAA All-Star Team that competed in the Canada Cup in Vancouver, B.C.

Medina (left) graduated from Trevor Browne High School in Phoenix in 2001, where she was selected as her team’s MVP, first team All-South West Region catcher, and Offensive Player of the Year with a batting average of .447. In 2000, Medina was named first team All-South West Region catcher and was the Offensive Player of the Year with a .505 batting average. Medina also served as her Student Council’s Junior and Senior Class President.

Cranmer will transfer from Arizona Western College in Yuma, Ariz. where she hit .360, had 63 hits, 56 runs scored, nine doubles, one triple, and belted five home runs as a freshman in 2002. She also has 39 runs batted in. Cranmer was selected first team all-conference, and first team all-region. Currently, Cranmer has helped led her team to a #3 NJCAA National Ranking, and leads the nation in runs batted in with 85. She also currently is ranked in the Top 5 with a batting average of .447. Cranmer (right) graduated from Valley View High School in Moreno Valley, Calif. in 2001.

"I am extremely excited about the signing of these two young ladies," Segal said. "Their presence and impact to our program will be felt immediately. "
