So what happened with JUCO DT Tony Gillespie that was supposed to sign with Troy but didn't and Rivals shows him as committed to noone. Could he still be in the air and up for grabs? Someone wiser than me fill me in on if we can get players to sign after signing day?

Tony Gillespie

Also remaining unsigned is Offensive Guard Dylan Laurens from OK a big ole boy

I also see an unsigned Whitney Richardson 3*

Rivals

what is the status of unused scholarships and how can we use them...I still see some spots that could use plugging and would love to see us use the remaining scholarships. Would they go to JUCO Spring grads?

We have seen coaches in the past hold back a couple scholarships for high-achieving walk-ons or for May JUCO grads. No idea if Coach Mac thinks that way.

Granting a scholarship to a warm body just to use them doesn't seem to be his style.

In the words of the fabulous Irma Thomas, "If I can't sell it, I'm just gonna sit on it. I ain't gonna give it away."

Test or grade related, most likely. I think the thing on Kendrick Ruben was that he didn't have an SAT score yet. On JUCOs, if they aren't on pace to graduate, they're headed to FCS or Division II. Remember, we've had some of those in the past...a DE that ended up at Tarleton and a CB out of Arizona. DOn't know where the CB ended up.

I think this is the case more for D2; I was noticing when that DE went to Tarleton that there was some pretty good talent coming out of the Lone Star Conference lately and going to the NFL. The academic standards are certainly lower at D2 level than FBS, not sure about FCS.

True. All true. Two ACU Wildcats started for the Chicago Bears - Johnny Knox and Danieal Manning.

Also, these two "small college" players were pretty good in the NFL for not having played "major college" ball - Jerry Rice and Walter Payton.

It's all a matter of grades and tests in most cases. Kids just don't take the tests in time to have their scores back, or their scores aren't there. Doesn't mean they aren't talented. Most just aren't getting a push at home - and, there are a myriad of factors there we won't go into here.
