As a geographer, I love the fact that you've posted something that puts mapping and football together! Two places I was noticing that are not in those "Deep South" states that score high: American Samoa and Utah. As a resident of Euless, Texas (note my screen name), it's been noteworthy that our football success has followed the move to out town of many with roots in Samoa, Hawaii, and (most especially) Tonga. Many of the young men from those families have the size and the desire to play football, often as linemen.

Once this new North Texas coaching staff has reestablished credibility, I feel (as I stated when I originally joined this board) that North Texas should be recruiting some of these Euless kids. As for Utah, my wife (yes she's a Mormon) pointed out, hey that's where a lot of those families move, because so many of them are Mormon. But they can't all go to BYU, and we need to start presenting ourselves as an attractive option. Anyone reading this article linked by Deep should scroll down and read the part from the part (from the "SI Vault") about those of Polynesian heritage, most of whom have come from the American Mountain West.

So, along those lines, here's another link, helping to further explain this geographic aspect of football, mentioning that a young man from Pago Pago, Samoa, is 40 times more likely to end up in the NFL than someone from any other part of the United States:

A lot of their settlement to Irving came from D/FW Airport and AA, from what I understand. Some of the best defensive players in the league today are polynesian. I'm absolutely on board with above statement, we should be sinking our hooks into the offensive and defensive lineman at Euless.

Here's the latest on Josh Davis, the DT out of Nacogdoches:

Josh Davis will play JUCO ball. It's a shame because he is a heck of a DT and a ton of schools are still looking for players at that position
