The Mesquite site shows up fairly frequently as the Mean Green Blog. But it is fixed now.

Thanks, I saw this last night and thought it was odd. I didn't understand how a local mesquite blog came up when clicking on the mean green blog. Then it was still that way around 11 this morning.

What is up with Vito lovin on Dickey's junk?

He is right about one thing, Dodge didn't come close to doing what Dickey did. Dodge left with class, Dickey was a jerk.

Also, I think Troy or FIU could win 26 straight in the Southland Conference.

The man was a negative a-hole and went out in a classless manner, but I had fun going to the games while I was in school and WE WON AND WENT TO BOWL GAMES!

We beat Tech, Baylor, Cinnci, SMU, and 26 conference games straight. During that I couldn't have cared less that the guy was a jerk. Doesn't the fact that that stretch was one of the winningest times in school history buy the man's reputation some slack? Especially considering that it was followed by perhaps the worst stretch in the history of the program.

The guy was a classless jerk and RV should have had him escorted out of the stadium by UNT police for that uniform shadiness he pulled.

I also don't remember enjoying much about watching Dickeyball either(although I was only around for the 99,05, and 06 seasons). I do remember the 3rd and long draw, "THROW THE DAMN BALL DICKEY!", and "YOU'RE BEING OUTCOACHED!"

Also, the 2000-2004 Sun Belt was not at the level it is now by any stretch of the imagination. The Sun Belt back then was full of Western Kentuckys. Which Sun Belt team has never beaten us? Oh yea, Western Kentucky. I would put money in Vegas that we could beat WKU 26 straight times if we only played them 6 times per year and could recruit in between based on our "conference success".

No one will win 26 in a row in conference again and thinking Troy or FIU could do it is laughable.

Boise State would disagree. They have won more that 26 consectuive before and were 2 missed field goals away from showing they could outdo 26 again next year.

Yeah, fans were classy back in Dickey's day.

Why denigrate a special period in UNT's history? Even if the WSun Belt is now a universially respected powerhouse. :(

I wonder how many of the fans back then would recognize a 'draw' if they saw one. Not every run between tackles is a draw. Dickey's run-oriented offense gave UNT a national rushing title, a long win streak in the Belt, four straight SBC coach-of-the-year recognitions, and four straight bowl appearences. Yeah, those were bad times alright.

If it was such a boring time with bad football why are Cobbs, Hall, Booger, et al remembered as being awesome?

Classless jerk? Sure. But I don't see how you can lionize the players and totally dismiss the coach. He was an integral part of one of the best times in the history of UNT football. Like him or not, you can't change that.

I agree somewhat but you gotta admit, you could have been coach and the results would have been the same. We had much more talented teams than the rest of the Sun Belt, that is why we were winning.

And who do you think recruited and coached those great talented kids???

I don't think it's that easy. However, DD would be remembered as a great coach by so many more people if he hadn't run his mouth like he did. He brought his own downfall. Even if he had ultimately gotten fired, had he had some class with the way he dealt with the situation, more people would have supported him. Including me. I just can't deal with the crap that flowed out of his mouth in public. I have no idea what he was like behind closed doors. All I saw was what was published and that was enough for me. I think he had some great coaching moments.

Dickey had some personal problems. I hope they are resolved. But after talking to some former players his downfall was not surprising.

I honestly believe that if he had won that third NO bowl he would have been hired away and DeLoach would have taken the reins.

It sucks he didn't take that game seriously.

It was nice of Dodge to leave with class. But how much does that really matter to UNT in the long run? I think Dickey's four conference championships and bowl win mattered a lot more.

He was a jerk going out, but over time I think UNT fans will come to appreciate what he did here as the second-best coaching tenure in school history. (At least until McCarney retires after winning his third consecutive national championship, a victory over Texas so devastating that the Longhorns end their football program.)

I think character trumps wins/losses. I want us to win... but I want us to do it the right way.

Barkeep: I'll have what he's having.

We all tend to forget that DD the head coach should be judged off of just that, his coaching resume, which stands on it's own merit.

As a matter of DD the person, that's open for debate and is a matter of opinion.

I appreciated the wins and enjoyed many of those seasons as a student and green winged alumni yet in the same breath was glad to see him go and felt it was a time for a change.

I wish him nothing but the best and hold no ill will, he was what we needed at the time and progressed us, however we measure it, one step closer to where we wanted to be.

Now, how far have we come from DD in a coach like Dan Mac? That's what striked me most about this entire thread.
