San Jose State - aren't they on some sort of death panel watch list? Couldn't California force them to drop their FB program, correct?

Seems like wishful thinking on the author's part.

I don't know how but we have got to improve our reputation not only locally but nationally as well. I know that winning cures a lot of ills and football record aside, a lot of the schools mentioned in this article couldn't carry our jockstrap. We are a growing university with plans to top off around 45K students, campus is huge acreage wise with room to build, the largest number of alum in the DFW area, and most of all they have me as an alum. The way they mentioned Montana and North Texas like that makes me want to go beat the crap out of a Pony.

1. This article is derogatory to North Texas. It says that even North Texas turned them down. It also didn't mention that this had been ongoing for several years.

2. Nowhere is there any implication that the MWC is about to offer SJSU membership in the Mountain West. It is a story spun from one meeting with the MWC in which nothing was offered or promised.

3. San Jose State would have to leave the WAC before there is a chance that someone might need to get the lights.

4. It's the San Jose Mercury-News for Pete's sake. They have been notorious for starting rumors with little or no fact. They're yellow journalism at its best.

It's the Bay Area market which San Jose State wouldn't be able to deliver, but the other Mountain West schools would. The Bay Area has an enormous affinity for the Mountain West Conference.

I can understand that, I would think that the Houston or Dallas/Ft Worth markets would have a bigger upside. The Bay area may love the MWC, but wouldn't a bad producing team bringing the conference down outweigh that?

Right now there is a dark cloud hanging over SJSU. With the budget California is facing, SJSU is a big risk to bring in at the moment.

It seems to me that if they felt SJSU and the Bay area were such a huge get, they would've done something about it at the same time, or before inviting Hawaii. USU is one thing, because they are building their case, but SJSU really hasn't done anything since all of this realignment started happening. While the Bay area would be a nice market, not even Texas State posted a home attendance of less than 9,000 this season.

Logic would tell me that the preference for adding schools, in order, is: Houston, SMU, UTEP, USU, North Texas, SJSU. Houston and SMU aren't interested and it's up to UTEP what happens next. Then again, I'm not sure what logic and realignment have to do with each other.

The Mountain West knows that it won't be able to land Houston or SMU. That's why USU and UTEP are the top two targets. The fact that San Jose State is getting any mention has to do with UTEP not being fully committed to the move. The Mountain West is reviewing what school of who all is out there could bring the most to the conference and still allow it to achieve its goals. San Jose State's name is being mentioned as is North Texas'. However, the Mountain West has repeatedly expressed its desire to keep a positioning in the state of Texas after the loss of TCU. San Jose State won't be able to do that. The Bay Area is a very good market to sell, but it's not Texas. It really looks like the MWC 12th member will either be UTEP or North Texas.

utep has already been stabbed by this group once, they will not go back to that mess. plus el paso is not a large media market nor safe for opponent fans. north texas and rv should be making calls to get an interview with the mwc asap.

I'd like to think he already has and meetings may have already occurred for all we know, not like much media camps out at the Athletic Offices. RV has delivered for this program in so many areas, I have faith he's done his due diligence and we're as well poised as anyone for future developments. Exciting times to say the least...

Would someone please tell me what SJSU has that would be appealing to the MWC. Are ANY of their teams good?

If we're going to pretend that any of this is related to sports other than football, San Jose usually has a pretty good post season caliber baseball team, and basketball has up years and down years. I'm pretty sure I recall them making the tournament a time or two in the past decade.

Of interest in looking this up, is that I see Eastern Washington playing a few WAC teams. Has anyone mentioned them as a candidate to move up to FBS?

E-mail Benson. Maybe he will start stalking them instead of us.
