When I was a student, a pretty good amount of TWU girls used to come to UNT football games. They all pretty well saw our football team as their football team. I am skeptical that a large percentage of the TWU student body or alumnae would be remotely bothered by a Denton business wholeheartedly supporting UNT football.
I think you're really downplaying what 18k at multiple NIU games represents. Dekalb Illinois has a population of about 40k and the county has a population of about 100k. NIU itself has an undergrad population of 11k and a total student population of about 15k. Dekalb is a town with 1 high school with an enrollment of about 2k. Denton and Denton county dwarf Dekalb and Dekalb County in all of those numbers. Home attendance of 18k over there means half the town is at the game. They could have every student at a game and not reach those numbers. You really are downplaying the impact that one Notre Dame win had on their attendance but yes, they needed to keep winning to keep it up like any team out there. I'm just pointing out we need marquee wins to start winning over the apathetic fan. More importantly, we need those marquee wins to make graduates proud to represent UNT in the fall. I've got buddies who applaud my loyalty for going to UNT games. Almost like they can't believe I waste my time driving 3 to 4 hours round trip to watch my school play.
