Another thing that stuck out:

Nick Fairley was a 3-star and could be the number one pick in the draft. One of many reasons these ranking systems aren't fool-proof.

Ranking systems are not, and never will be, foolproof because they can't measure heart and desire. They measure height, weight, speed and accomplishments. Some get bigger and faster and improve their motivation to do things better. A kid who accomplishes those things and has excellent coaching is not going to be the same one that got this rating out of high school. It also works in the other direction. Some give up because they can't compete with someone with more latent talent.

The ranking is far from perfect but it's the best we have and still a fair barometer in most cases.

Problem with ratings no matter what Rivals or Scout claims, they are primarily based on what schools are recruiting a player. While you can't argue the logic, the best teams have the most resources to identify players and are the most likely to attract the top athletics. The ratings become a self fulfilling prophecy as the best rated players sign with the top schools. This year that may be a little less true because Auburn and Oregon are generally not the perennial winners that OU, USC, Florida and UT are for example.

In the good ole days at least they rated the best players and didn't change them, now it is common for rankings to be altered after someone signs with a school perceived above or below their potential level. Therefore it is practically impossible to have a national power have a bad recruiting ranking and a lower tier school to jump very high in the hierarchy.
