Riley's departure really does leave us in a world of hurt at the QB position. We have one Scholarship player at the most important position on the field, and that player has almost no experience. Will Tune get a medical redshirt? Has he even applied? Please give us a break, NCAA. We sure could use one.

Options at the moment are Derek Thompson, Chaise Baine, Derrick Teegarden, John Dodson, and the new JUCO QB, whose name escapes me. Teegarden is listed at 6', 175lbs. I would expect a change to receiver. Thompson is the only QB over 6' on the current roster.

This really hurts us at QB, because at least with Riley, you knew you had a servicable, although not spectacular, QB who could do a lot with his feet. Now, we have no idea if we have anyone on the roster that can play QB at a D1 level.

The QB position at UNT.

It's wide open!

Our depth chart should be like this:

JUCO

Baine

Thompson

Teegarden

Dodson

Wish Dodge had given QB another go since Tune may not get a medical redshirt, and even so, Dodge would still get it if he tried out nicely for the position. I'm assuming the JUCO QB is our best shot for the starting QB, but I would say that Baine and Thompson get the majority of reps during training to be safe.

IF TUNE ASKS FOR AND GETS A MEDICAL REDSHIRT THEN HE IS THE LOGICAL CHOICE AS HE WAS AT THE START OF LAST SEASON. I HAVE HEARD THAT THOMPSON'S BROKEN LEG REHAB WILL LIMIT HIS CONTACT IN SPRING PRACTICE. THE JC IS A DROP BACK POCKET PASSER THAT MAY NOT BE A FIT FOR CANALES SCHEMES. BLAINE IS A GAMER BUT WAY TOO SHORT AND LACKS SPEED AND ARM STRENGTH. TEAGARDEN WAS NEVER RECRUITED TO PLAY QB AND WON'T AT UNT. BEST SITUATION IS FOR TUNE TO RETURN AND THOMPSON BE READY FOR FALL CAMP WITH THE JC AS INSURANCE. DON'T FORGET THAT JAMES HAMILTON WAS A HS QB AT CEDAR HILL. HAVING HIM AND DUNBAR IN THE SAME BACKFIELD GAVE FAU A LOT TO THINK ABOUT.

Right now I'd say our depth chart would be:

Thompson

Osborn

Baine

Teegarden

If Tune returns then he goes to the top with Thompson. Teegarden, to me, is a Riley clone at this point. He was a heck of a HS player at Odessa High just a little undersized, but could be effective if he puts on some weight, which he should. I would hope we can RS any high school signees unless they are obviously head and shoulders above anyone else.

Thompson and Osborn will battle it out in the spring. I hope we get a couple hs qb this year to start developing, they both will have 3 yrs left of school. wouldn't it be nice to have a qb with 3 yrs of exerience in our system, instead of a juco

If Osborn is going to participate in spring drills, then I anticipate that he will get the majority of reps. If Thompson is healthy enough to take snaps and "go through the motions" then he will probably get the next amount of reps.....unless Tune has been granted another year of eligibility, and then he probably will. After that it's "who knows?". I like Baine as the third or fourth guy, but obviously the coaching staff thought that an injured Riley Dodge was better. If the coaching staff doesn't think he's a viable candidate at QB, then I think he should give playing DB or safety a shot....preferably safety. At 6'X 210 he's certainly big enough. And since he once played WR, he's certainly fast enough. I liked how Dodson looked in fall camp and I think he should be given enough reps to get a fair evaluation. If Teeagarden was signed to play QB, then give him a fair evaluation as well. If he's not a viable QB, then put him where he can do the most good....WR or DB.

Osborne will be the starter.

I'm hoping NT goes after another JUCO recruit for competition and depth purposes. Another high school recruit will suffice if Osborne is believed to be the real deal.
