On Tiger board under thread about JJ as LSU's next coach there's a posting about Johnny getting into a fist fight of a parking space I believe at the Administration building...police were called...pretty interesting stuff. Kind of insight from younger days in life to UNT basketball coach. Of course I don't know if fist fight story is true or not.

Sounds like someone was mad or really late that day!! :growl:

Personally, I still think the Oklahoma State game was a bigger win for the modern era. It proved the tournament bid wasn't just a fluke run through the conference tournament... It happened in front of a huge crowd and changed a lot of people's perception of whether legit basketball could happen (or was in the process of happening) at North Texas... It came against a stronger team.

But, anyone who sees this one as bigger or more significant because of any reasons mentioned (or unmentioned) before... No arguments or complaints. I'm just glad we're at a point where fans and alums, both current and those who were able to appreciate the Blakeley era, can look at the events of the past few years and honestly think that what's happening ranks up there as potentially the greatest we've ever experienced.

alumni and students have shown to be their own worst enemy by not showing up at games, by not wearing Mean Green gear (why do you really think the local outlets have been so slow to carry UNT gear?),

This couldn't be further from the truth. The problem is on the supply side of the equation and guess who holds most of the cards in that hand? Every Lids and Hat World store I have ever been in seems to be low on Mean Green gear, especially around Christmas time. And when I ask for it they say they can't keep it in stock for very long. The truth is our fan base would buy more gear if it were available.

A very recent case in point.

Here is a photo taken by me at the gift shop at the ICE exhibit at the Gaylord Hotel in Grapevine last Sunday(December 19th).

Notice all the Oklahoma and Texas and other Big 12 gear along with all the purple TCU gear? Look at the top of the tree shaped stand in the middle.

There was just this one lonely Mean Green hat remaining among all the other schools. And when I asked if there were others they said no, that the North Texas hats had sold nearly out and that this hat was all that was left. Gee, I wonder why that is? What did that billboard on I 30 say, something about ..."95,000 North Texas Alumni work in the DFW Metroplex"....? And notice the brand of the hat underneath it? It say's "TOW". That stands for "TOP OF the WORLD" hat manufacturer out of Oklahoma, who until a couple of regular guys who eat, sleep and breath Mean Green called and made a request for a product application back in 2003, didn't even have a CLC license agreement to make North Texas products. And it was REAL difficult to do. Took all of about 10 minutes and a phone call. And whose job is it to make those phone calls and keep our license agreement company on their toes and working for us and to sell and market our brand to new and innovative suppliers and manufacturers?

I'll give you one guess who's job it isn't?

Point is a good basketball team draws 3,200 a game. Point is a bad football team draws 15K a game. Point is, this is Texas, where football is King, not Indiana.

Point is the head basketball coach at this school should NEVER make more than the head football coach. That would be a sure sign of misplaced priorities by the AD and BOR.

If the head coaches produces then he deserves his fair market value wherever it may be. I think JJ has earned a much higher salary than what he is making right now. I would not be opposed his salary being on a similar level to Coach Mac. I don't think it matters if you're in Indiana vs Texas etc. It is all about results and I think JJ has proven and earned a significantly higher salary than what he is making right now.

Show me one university in Texas where the basketball coach makes as much as the FBS football coach.

Just one, please.

You are right, it is a market thing, and FBS schools in Texas don't pay their basketball coaches more than their football coaches. That is the market:

Huge gaps in football and basketball salaries. The only exceptions are Kansas (Go figure, plus Turner Gill in his first year) and Baylor, where Art Briles makes 11.5K less than a basketball coach of a top 10 team.

Ok. St is about even, with Mike Gundy making 125K more than Travis Ford. All the others have a pretty heavy salary tilt toward the football program.

Who cares if no other Texas schools pay their basketball coach the same or more than the football. That point is irrelevant. The market just isn't Texas..its the whole NCAA. That is the market. Just because it is football and it is in Texas it shouldn't be God's gift to football coaches to automatically get and deserve a higher salary than a basketball coach. While I love the possibilities Coach Mac will bring to NT football he hasn't even coached one down and you talk as if there is no way in hell JJ should have a same or higher salary than him. It's about producing and that is the only thing that matters.

Now Tim Floyd at UTEP makes more than Mike Price according to my findings albeit very quick search. While Mike Sherman makes 1.8 million a season Mark Turgeon is not that far behind in making 1.2 million a year. I think basketball is just now sniffing this state as far as talent and programs and it is only going to get bigger and bigger.

NT beat much better teams including ranked teams in the old MVC days. The win over LSU would not rank in the top 20 wins of NT, however it is very significant for this years team.

Relative to NT merchandise availability, it seems every AD including RV has pronounced that the problem would be solved but it never is. It is not available in the majority of metroplex sports apparel retailers and it isn't because it is sold out.

Are you implying that LSU has won an NCAA title Plumm? That isn't the case.

I would give OSU the nod in the "post modern" (field of 64 expansion, now to 68, in the mid 80's) era. Other than LSU's one run in the 2006 Tournament - it's kind of been dormant since Shaq left. Oklahoma State was totally rebuilt into a semi-power in the early 90's, making 2 Final Fours and some deep runs up until roughly 2005 or so, when they've fallen back to mediocrity.

My one unsuccessful attempt to do what seems very popular in today's society--the complete revising of history albeit sports history.

My bad, CMJ, I thought they had won one NC during the Shaq era which was what--1 or 2 years before he turned pro?

I still lean on last weeks LSU win being our biggest in Mean Green basketball history just like the Tennessee football win was in.......well, you all know the rest of that one since you all have heard that one from me once (maybe twice?) the last 10 or so years on Harry's board?

Shaq played 3 years at LSU. I think he shared playing time in the post his first year and exploded into the limelight his sophomore year (that's how I remember it anyways). He was heavily courted by the NBA, but stayed for a 3rd year before coming out. Won a few NPOY awards, but LSU never did much in the Dance while he was there. I believe they never made the Sweet 16, I seem to recall a 2nd round exit his sophmore season and a 1st round upset his 3rd (I may have that switched).

That was near the beginning of the Duke dominance era. I think it during Shaq's 2nd season LSU traveled to Cameron Indoor and Christian Laettner destroyed him in their individual match-up.

That's right! Plus Chris Jackson was still there...and a star in his own right.
