FYI.....North Texas defeated LSU tonight by the score of 75-55.....your "local sports guy" gave scores for UTA vs Texas Tech, Texas (300 miles away), Baylor, etc....but not UNT's score....

I am not a satisfied viewer!

by the way, this is a Sun Belt team beating an SEC team BAD on their home court.....and UNT coach Johnny Jones is an LSU alum (possible interesting story?).....he played in the Final Four with them and then recruited and coached Shaq O'Neill in the Final Four...

but hey, keep giving us those UTA and Baylor scores....GREAT JOB!

point of fact...

Johnny recruited and coached Shaq.....during that time there was, indeed, a Final Four...

I should have put it this way -- Johnny recruited Shaq and coached him before, during, and after a Final Four took place...

thanks

LSU's Final Four that you refer to was in in 1986. Was Shaq really recruited that early? I mean I suppose it is possible, but he won his NPOY awards in 1992 (his Junior season before he came out early). His freshman year was 1989-1990.

Who cares when O'Neal played, the point is the local media ignored the largest university in their backyard, the only university in their backyard that has been to the NCAA's in recent memory. No excuse is acceptable.

Also not entirely true - UTA made it in 2008.

I still agree that it is no excuse not to mention the game though. It's honestly shocking considering it's a win over a name like LSU. I mean, it's kind of understandable when we get ignored for beating a school like Texas State....but LSU...at their place....by 20....

:growl:

We got a mention on Chl 4, but no highlights. Then again, no TV = no highlights. I figured chl 21 or 27 woulda been interested in broadcasting this game locally at least.

I have posted on this in the past, but it ain't gonna happen with the DFW media. Sending emails will get attention from Newy, Dale, Babe, and Doocy--when we lose. I saw it when both Aggie and Tech hoops fans would pepper those stations with emails about being ignored by the DFW Media in previous years. When either team got beat by Kansas or Texas, Newy would show plenty of highlights saying, "Well, Tech fans, here you go. Here's your coverage. You just got beat by 30. Keep those emails coming about how little attention you get." It will happen here, especially if we get beat by a team in SBC play.

There is just such a vast disconnect between the DFW Media and UNT from all the SWC days and our own perpetual ignorance of most things athletic over the previous decades. Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas once told me that he brought up this issue about UNT (regarding football) when he was with the DMN and the writers there all said the same thing. When UNT beats teams people know in football AND win their conference, they will get more attention. I don't know why hoops gets the same treatment, but its real and it isn't going away until we do something big-time in the NCAA Tournament, IMO.

Look what it's taken for TCU to just enter the local conversation. On the plus side, Newy and Dale will be dead soon.

Texas Tech did play UT-Arlington on Fox Sports Southwest last night so covering that game would have been considered following a local team...

Unfortunately for North Texas, the Mean Green Nation isn't comparable to the following of the four Big 12 schools in Texas. Three of them are in the AP and Coaches' top 25 (#15/15 Baylor, #18/22 Texas, and #25/24 Texas A&M) and since UNT isn't the only show in town, splitting airtime between all 4 Big 12 teams in Texas and the 4 Division I teams in DFW (UTA, SMU, TCU and UNT). So covering all eight teams last night wouldn't leave time for the four pro teams in DFW: Cowboys, Mavericks, Rangers, Stars. Then there are the stories to cover, Boise State's Las Vegas Bowl victory over Utah, the announcement of the Colonial's new sponsorship deal, FC Dallas' resigning David Ferreira (MLS MVP).

Bottom line: North Texas is in a market saturated with multiple teams from every sport imaginable. If UNT wants to get a piece of the pie, winning is only the first step in the right direction. Building a loyal following made up of alumni and outsiders is going to be much tougher.

Your point makes sense when discussing a normal UNT game, and until we get our fan base amd alums interested that will always be true.

BUT..... When little ole UNT absolutely destroys an SEC team that went to the dance last year it deserves at least a passing mention.... At the least!

I am not surprised by Th lack of respect and attention but I am surprised by the lack of a mention. We do have a large alum base here and the dismantling of an SEC team on the road is definitely news worthy in the home town, metroplex, of that school.

Isn't UNT/NTSU the Mecca of sports (and News) broadcasting? (Radio, TV & print) I mean Mr. Obama just repelled "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". Time for many of these folks to step up and/or come out! Now, having jokingly stated that, the attention will not happen overnight. Probably a more effective way to get the word out is to periodically email some of our more distinguised alums for some on air love. Additionally, HS coaches around the state. Would like to see more of them talk up UNT around their Blue Chip recruits. Jordan Williams committed to UNT before transferring to Kimball, but a former UNT alum has coached Kimball for years. Andre Boutte is a legend in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area.

Just curious! Who are some of our more distinguished media alums?

Obvious ones:

George Dunham (Ticket & former voice of Texas Stadium)

Craig Way (Voice of UT & FoxSouthwest HS Football)

Craig Miller (Ticket)

Bill Mercer (Former voice of the Dallas Cowboys)

Mark Followell (Voice of the Dallas Mavericks)

Dave Barnett (ESPN & Texas Rangers)

Cynthia Aguirre (WFAA)

Debbie Denman (WFAA)

Tim McMahan

LaDarrin McClain (HS Coverage)

Doug

Bill Moyer

Bob Ray Sanders

Many others I'm sure in backroom of production studios.

Maybe we can obtain business email addresses and blast out our on field accomplishments. (Maybe Twitter)Heck, I'm sure they would feel more comfortable with shot outs to UNT with more alum pressure.

Just saying!

Last nice Mike Doocey mentioned that UNT beat LSU at the tail end of the sports segment (no video, though they did manage to get the crappy Internet feed of UTA-Texas Tech). When Doocey mentioned the score, Steve Eager said "REALLY?!" as if Doocey just announced Christmas had been cancelled.

No mention on ESPNDallas.com either. But, they do mention SMU's great 49-38 win over Alabama State. :goodjob::rolleyes:

Speaking of that SMU game, I love this quote from a post on the Pony basketball board:

The person to whom I gave my season tickets called this morning and said he counted 48 people on the "bench side" of the coliseum last night. He also asked if I wanted my tickets back! "Nope. Merry Christmas."

By the way, SMU officially reported the attendance as 1422.

I wonder how many people are actually going to show for this coming week's game against Dallas Christian College. They will likely report over 1400 again, but there will probably be less than a hundred actually in attendance.

Today's DMNews reports that the SMU strength of schedule this year (so far): 299.

Ironically that's also the number of how many people are REALLY showing up to their games.

I posted a messaged on Doocy's facebook wall thanking him and he said "thanks for noticing."
