At first glance I thought we were getting the great ex-UCONN/Bobcats Center.

About 2 weeks ago this kid shows up to my neighbor's house for a birthday party while I was sitting on the driveway listening to us play K-state. He heard the game and asked me if that was the North Texas game. When I replied yes he told me his name and proudly proclaimed his commitment as a recruit. He talked about the excitement of the new stadium and how he liked Coach Cannales.

The kid is a beast, someone that's looks to be feared on an offensive line. One of those guys that made me think the future is bright if we can recruit talent like him.

His HS doesnt have a varsity program, only a JV, That why no one else offered him a scholarships. You never know this guy might turn into something but i think its kinda funny were offering JV players scholarships :goodjob:

They have varsity, this is just their first year of varsity.

The reality is that a program like NT has to take on these projects...though they do seem risky. Who knows...he may be a SB 1st team linemen before all is said and done...

Not exactly the same as this guy, but...

SMU also has that kid from Estonia who had never played football, but was a good field athlete. I think he's set the NCAA record for blocked kicks now.

The great Walter Payton didn't play football until his junior year of high school. Then, he went to a small school for college. He did okay in the NFL later on as well, some would say.

This current Chicago Bear didn't start playing until he was in junior college: http://www.nfl.com/players/johanasiata/careerstats?id=ASI059326

The thing is, if the article is correct, this is more than just signing a physically big kid and hoping he works out. Okafor seems to excel at sports where you also need coordination, like basketball, and strength and agility in track and field.

I feel better about this kid than some of the risks we took under Dodge for guys who were just physically big, but never hit the playing field. I'm thinking of the JUCO OL from Mississippi who was a giant, but never played.

Give me the "project" with athletic ability, not just some big kid. This kid Okafor sounds like he is already a willing worker on and off the field. How can we complaining about a kid who excels in the classroom and in whatever sport he attempts?

Im glad we are now recruting JV football players

I like the kids size but how does he match up to D1 talent??

http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=925090

He is simply listed in the 'Others Who Impressed' area of the article. This would have been going into his junior season. His class spent their sophomore season at North Mesquite High and I would think that he was no exception.

He is in the first graduating class of Sunnyvale High. His coach says that he dominated everyone that he played against but he was much larger than the competition so that means little. SMU was at least impressed enough that he was recruited by them although they didn't offer.

Sunnyvale having played against JV or lower teams his first three high school seasons....Sunnyvale, in its fourth year of existence, played a JV/semi-varsity schedule in 2009, picking up games wherever it could.

It might be their varsity team but their playing against JV teams all 4 seasons

Did you not read the quote where it said he played against JV competition his first 3 seasons? It indicates this is their first year of varsity competition and says nothing about them playing JV teams in the 2010 season.
