Posted

Overall- 59-81(with non D1 wins included)

VS. Division 1- 47-80

OOC Minus UNT- 37-78

We have 1/4 of the sun belt's OOC victories this season. What has happened exactly to make the sun belt drop so far down?

Wasn't it just a few years ago we were in the top 12 of RPI in conference strength?

What can we expect in the future from the our conference mates?

Tasty or CBL, could one of you answer these questions please?

Is the sun belt so pour this season because the majority of teams are young and inexperienced or is it just a talent issue. I don't know what to make of this, I could not be more happy with the success that the basketball program has had, it's been a nice substitute so to speak from the abysmal football program we have had the last six years, and I don't see us falling off anytime soon given the class of 2011, but I don't want us to be a basketball school primarily. WKU and USA have been pretty good over the last 5 years, but they have fallen off a lot, what will it take for schools like ULM, MT, ASU and FAY to take off? The sun belt has regressed the past two years in both football and basketball this year. The WAC imploding will help with football, but I am really concerned with the future of sun belt basketball, we need to get out of this conf. immediately. I know that's like beating a dead horse, but the only sport the sun belt is a national title contender in is baseball, and we don't even have that.

Here's to finishing 25-2, hopefully our conference mates will pick it up.

Boy...this is loaded, but it's snowing and I've just made a fresh French press, so I'll give it ago.

With one team, WKU, passing judgement based solely on wins and losses isn't fair...they've 7 losses, but in terms of competition not a one they can really be embarrassed about. In game performance, perhaps, but that doesn't hurt RPI. They've a recruiting class at least on par with ours...they'll be fine moving forward.

The Louisiana schools are both bringing in new coaches...ULL lost their top 2 scorers who accounted for 32 ppg last year...ULM lost their top 2 scorers and their new coach and team is suffering the APR penalties left by the previous regime. ULL is better than they've played so far this year...thats based on the eyeball test and my opinion, so take that for what it is I suppose. Both TTG and I respect Bob Marlin (ULL) and Keith Richard (ULM as coaches and program builders and think both of these schools arrows are pointed up...the reclamation project at ULM will be tougher, but both should be significantly better in the next year or two.

UALR is pulling its weight...I don't think they're too talented, but Shields' system is a good one. That said, I think they've a limited ceiling unless the talent level significantly improves.

ASU is the biggest disappointment in the Belt so far. They should've had three prolific guards this season...one transfered, one was just kicked off the team and one was hurt all of last season and is not back 100%...all that said, it's not excuse for their performance so far. They've a proven, name head coach with a track record of recruiting, especially talented big-men. That said, this team needs a dynamic guard. Not sure of what to make of their future.

Denver can leave.

Troy will be down for a while...so long as Don Maestri keeps recruiting the way he did this past off-season. Their little 2 season run to the top I think can be seen as pretty fluke-y.

Both Florida schools are coming up...FAU b/c of talent and coaching...FIU b/c of talent.

MTSU and USA are kinda the swing schools for this conference...when they're up the conference looks a lot better. Both have been a bit disappointing this season...but at the same time neither has really lost to anybody that really leaves you scratching your head. Both bring back a lot next season, but both also graduate their best players in Washington (MT) and Williams (USA). I think USA will be fine moving forward...near the top of the conference for the foreseeable future. I think what you see is what you get from MTSU...middle of the pack team year in and year out.

The conference has some damned good coaches...Jarvis, Brady, McDonald, Marlin, Richard, Arrow and Jones...and most have both the resources and basketball tradition to continue to improve. This has certainly been a rough year...you're right, not too terribly long ago the Sun Belt was in discussion with conferences like the Missouri Valley and Horizon...traditional 12 and 13 line bids...now its lumped in with the Southland, Big South and Big Sky...15 seeds. I see a lot of teams with bright futures...and I think if the 150 RPI rule is adhered to across the conference...then we should see some improvement in the coming seasons...think 6 or 7 schools in the top 125 in RPI as opposed to the 3 or 4 we have this season. The back-end of the conference however, 300+ RPI, will probably not change too soon.

If we take the regular season and conference tourney...maybe with 2 or 3 conference losses against maybe an FAU and WKU...I can't imagine us back on the 15 line.

I agree that sooner or later we will be back. We have problems right now though tough schedule or not. If we had a good team this year then we would have taken one or two of those games that we weren't supposed to win. I don't think we have it this year. Pity.

Personally, I am inclined to think that ULM will more or less always be mediocre. They are on the bottom of the belt in budget, and thier focus will always be on football. Oh sure they will put together a nice team every twenty years or so. But I don't anticipate them ever becoming a basketball power.

Marlin built a prety consistent winner at Sam Houston was it? He has quite a bit to work with at ULL. I have a ton of respect for that program. Win, and they will have the fan support.

Personally I think UALR has maybe the most untapped potential out of any program in the belt. When you look at Gonzaga and the sustained success that they have had it is at least partially because they are in a town that is much like Little Rock. It is a large town that is not so large that it has pro teams to compete with, and does not have any major college teams to call its own (I know the razorbacks are popular there but that is a good hour and a half away). Little Rock really has a void that could be filled as far as sport entertainment goes.

Agreed. Brady is a good coach that had them well on thier way to repectability. But there is a window for success and some bad luck has set him back quite a bit. How long does Brady struggle before he is labled a has been among recruits and fades?

Denver can leave.

So have they waivered from thier departure now that the Wac's autobid is in jeapordy?

Troy will be down for a while...so long as Don Maestri keeps recruiting the way he did this past off-season. Their little 2 season run to the top I think can be seen as pretty fluke-y.

Maybe after they build thier new arena Maestri will retire / get fired and they will get a coach that can build for the future instead of constantly rebuilding with Jucos and running a gimmicky 3 point system.

Both Florida schools are coming up...FAU b/c of talent and coaching...FIU b/c of talent.

FAU may be poised to dominate the East for a couple of years. I say that with a heavy heart.

Historically, over the decades, USA has been one of the most consistently good programs. They are the only Belt team with an all time winning record against WKU. They will be back, it is a matter of time.

MTSU is stuck in no-man's land. They don't ever seem to get over the hump. Kermit wins enough games to keep his job, but he never gets them where they want to be. I don't know if MTSU has the disposition to fire him for winning seasons or not. So I have to agree... unless he just gets lucky one year and moves on... they are who they will be. Never that bad... never really good.
