Clint Granger is the other QB prospect listed by Vito. This is an article on the Pierce CC Clint Granger (there is another with that name at Coffeyville CC). He is to visit this weekend.

He seems to be more of a pocket passer than a dual-threat quarterback. He has good size and decent quarterback speed. I know that we need depth but with two years eligibility left how much production can Canales expect?

I think we'd all agree that if any JUCO signee cannot enroll this Spring and participate in Spring Football then we have wasted a 'ship that we can ill afford to waste at this point in time.

UNT QB's

Riley Dodge: How much more can this storm trooper endure? He may be our starter but we must have a "co-starter" ready to go, too.

Derek Thompson: How bad was his injury? He's still virtually untested outside the practice fields.

A HS QB Who Graduates This May? Get us a stud, Coach Mac and Chico, and one who can run like the wind and throw equally well. If there is a clone of the Boise State QB that would be a good start. :)

GMG!

PS: Anyone else already sense our recruiting is moving up to the next level, too?

GMG!!

The difference is they run pro style offenses and we want a mobile quarterback for our system. Their 40 times are irrelevant since they aren't expected to run plays such as the read option that require the QB to be a legitimate threat to run.

Makes one wonder how most of the NFL QBs ever got recruited at the college level.

Actually, I would definitely not agree with that. I would prefer to have them this spring, but if we can get a better player at arguably the most important position on the team (QB for those just joining), I would use a scholly in a heartbeat. I love the heart of Riley, but he didn't exactly blow anyone away. He is all heart, but if we can get someone that has Riley's heart, but in a bigger, faster, stronger athlete, I am taking it. Even if we only get a year or two out of them. Thompson looked nice, but we barely saw him so I don't want all my marbles in those two baskets.

I agree, unless we have the expectation that Dodge, Thompson, Tune (if he's granted a Medical RS)and Baine cannot go next year, we really don't need to use a ship on a JUCO QB. If we are going to offer ships to JUCO's it needs to be D-tackles & Linebackers....and they need to be on campus in the spring.

I can't believe anyone after going through this year would think that NT doesn't need more QB's. Assuming Dodge plays QB next year and Thompson comes back well, that gives NT two scholarship quarterbacks. Baine showed a lot of guts and proved to be adequate but he is not someone that is going to compete for a starting position. If Tune recovers and got a medical redshirt that would be great, but that has not happened. NT will get one and probably two QB recruits this year.

Well, he's certainly tall enough to get the job done. But someone help me out, does running a 4.8 forty qualify you as a "mobile QB"?

i will leave it to coach chico to decide, but i have a hard time getting excited about a 2a qb. i would much perfer a qb from 5a or at least 4a ranks.

Whatever happened to just putting the best players on the field? If a JUCO kid fills a position need, he can either play right away or he could be redshirted then play the year after. Either way, two years is a long time. They obviously like the Granger kid if he's coming for a visit.

If you've seen any of the McCarney interviews he has repeatedly said that he likes to build a program with four-year players. He said that he would use JUCOs in an emergency but the use would be limited.

All things being equal, I would usually agree with this.,

However, over the last 15 years all the programs have really gotten into "informal" off season 7 on 7 competitions. These kids from lower divisions are mixing it up from teams from upper divisions, and are getting quite a bit of exposure against those teams that usually are bigger/faster overall.

I think it evens it up quite a bit, not totally, but now those kids from smaller divisions are not so far behind in the learning curve.

You must have a hard time getting excited about a lot of good QBs. A good number of QBs at those 4A and 5A programs succeed by being surrounded with top talent from a much bigger talent pool.

I might like the odds better with a good 4A/5A QB, but I wouldn't snub my nose at the potential for another Colt McCoy or Kellen Moore (or probably numerous other 3A and lower QBs that I don't know off the top of my head).

Celina was 2A Tune's senior year and Derek Thompson went to Glen Rose which is 3A. There are so many camps around now and with 7on7, these kids face a lot of diffent levels of competition. There's a sophomore QB,Tyrone Swoopes, at class 2A Whitewright that I hope NT has their eye on. 6'4" and about 220 lbs, a Vince Young type. I heard he was MVP of the TCU QB camp last summer.

have just removed foot from mouth. i didn't know mccoy came from a 2a highschool. my bad. pile it on.

It's no fun when you're totally cool about it.

And to be honest, as much as everyone is piling on, I think the 4A or 5A kid -- especially local -- always creates a bigger stir. It's human nature.
