Is Fran not the Man for them either?

"Our sources tell us TCU special teams / tight ends coach Dan Sharp is in the mix at Texas State."

http://www.footballscoop.com/the-scoop

Probably vice versa. Not sure that Texas State will be willing to pay the amount of salary that Fran would require when their league may have less than eight teams. The WAC is on its deathbed which wouldn't be attractive to Coach Fran.

Did anyone ever think that Francione would end up at Texas State ?

Only if you were alreday drinking too much wine or beer in the Mean Green Room.

Neither Fran nor Leach is going to end up at Texas State. UTSA got Larry Coker because NO ONE, ANYWHERE ELSE IN AMERICA WANTED HIM. Not one school. None. He could not get a job, period. He begged the AD at UTSA to start a program.

Not that I am advocating for Fran, but he doesn't seem to be able to get a job. Look at all of the coaching opportunities that have come up since he left Aggieland. People mention him for different jobs, but nobody ever hires the guy. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

In our case,

He was here once before.

Fran lives an hour away from San Marcos in Horseshoe Bay.

He's been spotted on campus and at several athletic events over the past couple of years.

A couple of "big fish" donors expressed interest in him last year when Wright's contract was set to expire.

Like or hate him, his name is recognized around the state / country.

Nobody seems to want to hire Junior away from Blinn. Maybe he wants to pull a Bob Knight, and set junior up with a position to be his successor when he is ready to retire.

please quit pretending you have a clue about what you say

how would it be possible for Coker to have "talked their AD into starting a football program" when UTSA had a plan published on line for their ENTIRE athletics program and for funding it, building facilities, and starting football.....BEFORE COKER WAS EVER CONSIDERED TO BE HIRED

the half truths and outright lies that gmgers tell on this board are laughable........if you spent half as much time being concerned about the shape of UNT athletics as you do trying to discredit coaches with a national championship and a huge winning record at a program that plays a lot of though opponents with high expectations perhaps UNT would not have to look over their shoulder at UTSA and TxState

and if you were not looking over your shoulder at those programs......you would not need to make things up and then state them on your fan forum an a failed attempt to make UTSA look worse than you already think it is

At least we know where you're trolling from now.

why because I am intelligent enough to know that UTSA got UT System BOR approval to start a football program long before they even considered hiring a coach

or because I am smart enough to know that coaches don't luck into winning a MNC even with "other people's players" much less winning 80% of their games over 6 seasons at Miami

or because I find it embarrassing that the only way some can build up a program is to repeatedly spew half truths and lies about things they have no clue about and I wish to correct them so they don't continue to embarrass themselves or the team they support further with easily disprovable claims

So far Dennise Franchione, Tim Brewster and Bobby Jack Wright are expected to interview for the job. More names are expected to be added in the next few days. Canales was mentioned but not sure he will interview (given he was just offered OC for UNT). Here is a story on the topic.

College Football: Can Texas State afford a big-name coach?

By Tyler Mayforth

Daily Record Sports

...Two names being thrown around by sources are former Texas A&M head coach Dennis Franchione and Oklahoma co-defensive coordinator Bobby Jack Wright.

Fans would know of Franchione from when he was head coach at Texas State from 1990-91. Franchione compiled a 13-9 record before bolting for New Mexico, TCU and Alabama.

If Franchoine is hired, he’d probably bring his son (Brad) along as offensive coordinator. Franchione also knows Texas State Director of Athletics Dr. Larry Teis pretty well from his days with the Horned Frogs and Lobos.

While Franchione has an 187-101-2 record as a head coach, he’s 107-81 at the FBS level and 4-3 in bowl games. Franchione also has a history of jumping between programs.

Wright might not have experience as a head coach, but he’s an excellent recruiter and has experience at the top level. Plus, Wright played at Texas State — then Southwest Texas State — from 1969-72 and and according to sources, wants to get back to the Hill Country and has contacted several people within the athletic department to get his name in front of Teis.

He also reportedly has a staff lined up if he gets the call from Texas State.

The knocks on Wright are that his defense at Texas (where he was the sole defensive coordinator in 1997) got torched for 33.3 points per game and that he doesn’t call the shots on defense with the Sooners.

If Texas State chooses to hire from outside of its network for the first time since Manny Matsakis, the Bobcats will need to work extra hard to convince the hire that taking over a startup FBS program would be a step forward in their career. In turn, the candidate would need to assure Teis and the others that Texas State wouldn’t just be a stepping stone to the next pond.

Texas State posted the head coaching position on its job board Tuesday afternoon and as of Wednesday night, only three people turned in applications. In talking with several people inside the university’s Department of Human Resources, they expect that number to skyrocket within seven days.

Bobby Jack Wright was an assistant at North Texas a zillion years ago it seems now.

Coach Fran? His strange journey thru the NCAA has caused some to hesitate on him. He was my choice for this job albeit a reluctant one because he only spent 3 years even at TCU and had brief stops at Alambama and TAMU for that matter. He just has not stayed long hardly anywhere and UNT needs someone who will stay at least 5 or 6--build the program on sold Top 25 rankings ground and then let the chips fall where they may.

Except for about 10 schools in the NCAA, we are all stepping stones to the next level as I noticed the TSU officials saying they didn't want to be that.

If TSU (SM) gets him it would be a surprise to some, but it would also say to many "why did't others want to put him under a contract?"

Coach Fran is in deed a talent, but sometime the ol' saying of "you can never go back" may apply with him at TSU/SM.

The level of the name of the UTSA coach may influence Fran to give it another shot in San Marcos.

Both UTSA and TSU/SM have to wonder about how soon they can become FBS elgible with the WAC problem and all.

You are such a joy to have on this board. Are you always this friendly?
