Speaking of longevity. Does anyone know how Riley is doing with the compressed disc? It was scary to see him get carted off the field and I hope he is doing well.

Talked to him after the press conference, he said he has no injury he was just knocked unconscious for a moment.

Agreed. I caught up with Riley on last Sunday morning at the Athletic Center and he said no injuiries, just got knocked out He said he was returing and would (wanted) be our QB. No compressed disc, no concusion, no stinger....nothing. Phew...Go Riley! GMG!!

I thought Riley's arm looked better this year then ever before, I only worry about his longevity at QB.

I agree about his arm in terms of time at UNT; I only saw him in one high school game, and it wasn't really a high scoring enough game (they won like 22-21 over Euless Trinity) to tell much. I did feel like in the game against Troy, he seemed much more aware of throwing the ball away when nothing was happening, and wondered if that was how he was being coached, so as to avoid unnecessary risks.

I'm only throwing this out there because I thought it needed to be said. I don't think Chase Baine will be our starter, but I felt like I was seeing a different guy from the one we saw against Arky State and FIU, when he came in for Riley in the last few minutes of the K State game. He had me convinced that we still had a chance to win, right down to the last play, when his hail mary got intercepted in the end zone. It was what he did before though, by getting us in position to make that throw, that impressed me. And before, I didn't know if he had the arm strength to throw the ball as far as he did. It definitely made me think that Canales can coach up quarterbacks.

McCarney stated he wants a dual threat QB. I think it's Riley's spot to lose, unless a Juco guy comes in.

I believe that it's Riley's job to lose, and if Tune gets his redshirt, don't count him out. I haven't heard anything about the medical status of Thompson and if he will be out there in the spring. If the top three show up at spring practice healthy and viable for play, then I think that the coaching staff ought to look at Chase Baine to play safety.

Head Tune really wants to come back but wasn't too encouraged to by the previous coaching staff (TD??). McCarney may have different ideas.

Given how efficient Riley was this year, I think it is his job to lose. He completed 60% of his passes and threw 11 TDs and only 4 INTs. I don't recall if he had any fumbles, but he certainly did a much better job of taking care of the ball. In an offense with Lance Dubar, that may be all that matters.

I'd say the spring and two-a-days will be an interesting QB competition. We finally have a guy here (Canales) who has an outstanding proven track record of recruiting Quarterbacks. I'd bet you there will be a fresh new face in the competition during spring ball, who has measurables like we haven't seen her at North Texas in a long, long time; along with having a bazooka arm. I'd also bet you that the WR's we recruit will be bigger bodied guys than the ones in the past 4 years. Canales has said to me many times that we have a nice group of playmaking WR's, but we want to start getting the bigger bodied ones who can be more effective inside and blocking as well as catching.

Does Vizza have any elgibility left?

Everyone seems to want Riley to start next season. I would be fine with that knowing that if he is it's because he won the job. So what development did you see from Riley from the Army game to the Kstate game that allowed this offense to move the ball? Was it Riley? Was it Canales learning how to best use him?

When a new coach takes over an absolute disaster the idea is to rebuild the roster... Not jump through hoops to retain guys from eras past.

Coach Canales presided over last year's offense, so the only thing that will be done offensively will be "tweaking". The main area of rebuilding will be on the defensive side.

My vote would be for Nathan Tune at QB for next season, that's if he is granted a medical red shirt. Tune shows that he can go into big time games and get it done. As for Riley, have him back at Wide Receiver. We will be losing a couple WR's, Jackson and Lott, so he will be a nice replacement for these dynamic WR's that we will lose come next season.

If Tune is not available, then see how Derek does in the spring and make him our starter. Any great wide receivers that we may get this year out of HS then allow him to possibly red shirt and start building depth and long term success. Just my thoughts.
