From that board:

McCarney is not a below average HC. He is a good HC who was at a below average program. His record has to be taken into context -- once he turned the ISU program around he went to 5 bowl games in 7 years. No other coach in ISU history before or after Dan has come close to matching that. And Dan did that with the smallest football budget in the Big 12 and with facilities that look like a big high school, while competing with programs like Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska.

Dan has a good resume -- in addition to HC experiience, he has been an assistant coach on Rose Bowl teams at Iowa under Hayden Fry, defensive coordinator on Rose Bowl teams at Wisconsin under Barry Alvarez, and most recently an assistant coach on a National Championship team at Florida under Urban Meyer.

Dan has long been known as a great recruiter and has recruited the upper midwest including MInnesota for years at Iowa, Wisconsin, and ISU...and he recruits this area today for Florida.

He is also a high character guy who's program never experienced an NCAA investigation, his players had relatively few off-field problems, and an above-average graduation rate.

Based on history, Minnesota will probably go for a flashy assistant coach who has little substance but is good at using twitter (like Brewster). That's unfortunate, because McCarney would do great things at MInnesota where he has a beautiful new stadium, great facilities, and a BTN-funded competitive budget -- all things he did not have at ISU.

That was kind of funny....

Not my first choice, but I can live with it. The guy has a helluva resume, IMO. I would take him over Canales.

Bring on Lieutenant Dan!

This is definitely going the safe hire route. I think he would be OK, and has proven to be a good coach at Iowa St., but I was hoping we could do better.

I take him 1000 times over Coach Canales.

Definitely the "safe" route by RV. At least he didn't go ultimate conservative and hire Bower.

Fry's record at SMU was about the same before Prez' Jitter Nolen snatched him up after SMU had thrown him away. Coach Fry had been at a school who was trying to regroup and find its identity 10 plus years after the Doak Walker Era ended; but moreso, SMU was trying to figure out how they would co-exist with that other Big D team who moved to town in 1960--Your Dallas Cowboys. (They are still trying to figure that out all these years later, too).

IMHO, McCarney does not give us that Texas-based background splash hire, but his having any association with Hayden Fry indicates to some of us that he had received a good apprenticeship. I mean look at all of Fry's Iowa assistants who became successful starting with the Stoops family who played for Fry. I know, we are not supposed to revere the only coach North Texas has had in 40 years with a career W/L record over .500, but we have more to talk about concerning Fry than the last 6 we've had in Denton combined.

I would think Coach Chico could have a place on his staff if he wanted (if, in deed, McCarney is our hire). After all, we will need an offensive mind since McCarney is a defense guy, right, and Chico gives us a head start in that department. In many ways, if Chico took a job (if offered) his stock will go up considerably only if we start having winning seasons. Just another .02 worth of lagniape.

GMG!

Rivals radio this morning mentioned that it looked like Mccarney. The host Bill King and Tom Dienhart who was reporting that both had praise for him saying they had a lot of respect for the man and he would be great for NT. I'm kind of like SUMG, I am going to support whomever they get no matter what, but I was expecting a little more flash if they didn't keep Canales.

How about McCarney as HC making $650,000 and Canales as Associate HC/Off Coordinator making $250,000

This is a real reach.....How about McCarney as HC, Canales as Offensive Coordinator and...........Leavitt as Defensive Coordinator?
