Southwest Texas State has cleared another hurdle in their bid to change names. The committee now has the last big hurdle to face in the Texas Senate. The new president is seeking the name change to Texas State University.

Comments? I don't want to stir up a hornet's nest, but I did want to run this by you and see if there is any validity to this.

Could you post any discussion you might have about this on the Sun Belt Conference Delphi Forum (http://forums.delphiforums.com/SBCsports/messages)?

Yep. I'm not a fan of the name change. North Texas has had enough name changes to cover the entire state:

TNC&TTI, NTNC, NTSNC, NTSTC, NTSC, NTSU, UNT

The funny thing is in the movie "Necessary Roghnes," Texas State (filmed at North Texas) plays SWT early in the film. It's too perfect.

And yes, Fire Fightin' Rick was the armadillo mascot...

Southwest is very smart to make this move. The name change would propell them into the next level. Directional names do not work. USC is the only school with any national clout. Texas State vs UT in 10 years will be the biggest rivalry since the schools are 25 miles apart. Why does UNT continue to ignore marketing strategies to pull us up from 2nd class in Texas. UNT alumni school spirit sucks so bad. This board is the only hope for UNT.

UNT needs the following......

Better Name , but I can live with UNT...

Baseball Team

Law School

Football Stadium

Alumni Support

and more trash talking to SMU,UT,A&M, and Tech.....

UNT grads are among the most energetic, successful, and down to earth alumnus in the state yet I have yet to talk with Alumnus or students who whole heartily express their school spirit....

Everyone on this board should have season tickets, be part of the Exes, and E-mail the admin for better facilities to compete if they want our financial support.....

I'm Done

I support the President and our troops....Free Iraq and free Tibet

Won't happen; that would make them appear as though they are the Flagship of the Texas State University System, which they are not. SFA and other schools in that system will oppose the change, as well as other Texas schools. Look for maybe "Texas State Univ at San Marcos" or something like that instead.

I think they're relatively smart for making the move, but c'mon TSU/UT would NEVER reach the level of the A&M/UT game. That's ridiculous.

As far as USC being the only directional school with national clout....that is true, for now. Let's wait a few years.

I agree completely. It could never dream of touching that game, probably will never reach UT/TT and ten years from now won't even be close to UT/Baylor.

Nah I can see it reaching the level of the Baylor game. wink.gif

I can see a scenario where they'd care slightly about the Bobcats. They are afterall, so close in proximity.

Like I said though, ever since Teaff retired the Bears have gone into the dungeon of college football. No one finds them relevant.

Anyways, you're right...UT probably will never care much about either school again. From where I sit though SWTSU has a greater potential to at least annoy the Horns.
