The thing I keep shaking my head at every time I see it on this board is "you people" think/thought Todd Dodge a "name" coach. How many college football fans outside of the State of Texas even know who he is now much less in 2006?

In the world of NCAA Football Todd Dodge never was, and never shall be a "name" coach.

Sir, I qualified that statement with "in Texas". If you were here, yes, you would call Todd Dodge a "name" coach. Is he a name coach on a national scale? Only if you are REALLY into High School football. Otherwise, not even close.

As far as "never shall be", I'm not convinced of that. You may be right though. But I think a few years bouncing around as a QB coach > Passing Game Coord > Offensive Coord of some good universities, he may have another shot.

As a Missouri Tigers fan, you should be very aware of Mr. Dodge.

But more than anything, I would want RV and the athletic department/university administration to sell Mike Canales to me – and even more important, sell the concept of a strong commitment to the football program. And then bring Mike Canales to the East Texas region – let me meet him and hear his vision – let him get me all fired up!

You know, Todd Dodge was head football coach for 4 years – to my knowledge neither he nor the athletic administration EVER came to East Texas to meet the alumni and ask for our help in putting fannies in seats. That is now changing with the Mean Green Club Representative program. But seeking our help and rallying the alumni has not existed up to this point. The numbers are here in East Texas. The love of UNT is here. Memories are here – now it is up to the next head football coach, RV, and the UNT Athletic Department to show us they are going to deliver.

If it makes you feel any better, no one knew West Texas even existed, much less visited or recruited.

So now USF really never accomplished much at all in the first place?

Wow, just wow!

Rick

Where did anybody say this? Quote it if it's out there. I'm sure as hell not re-reading the 9 pages of this thread. Why is everything so sensationalized with some of you people?

I can assume it's directed at me and my posts. Yea, USF got to number 2 in BCS. Once. For one week. What else have they done but been an AVERAGE AQ team? Spare me the 14 years crap. They had extraordinary circumstances and are now a perennial 7-8 win team. The only thing I've said is tap the brakes on their praise.

Just because he was Chase Daniel's high school coach doesn't mean he would be known to Missouri fans. I only took notice because Southlake is so close to Keller.

Right and wrong!

Not only would I be a UNT fan, but I would also be a donor to your program. Not only would I attend as many home games as possible, but I would attend away games as well. My hometown is less than 50 miles from Jonesboro, AR, my condo in Florida is within spittin' distance of FAU's stadium and about a 20 minute drive to FIU. Bowling Green, KY is not that far of a drive from where I live either.

I don't think the mods will mind a small little donation to to GMG. Just sayin,

You're right again. Oh wait, there was an article on the Dodge hiring and his background in USA Today, and if I am not mistaken, that is a national publication.

What's your great concern with North Texas football? Aren't you a Missouri fan?

What in the following coach's backgrounds suggested to the person in charge of hiring them that they would be a good head coach?

Bob Stoopes

Bill Snyder (when originally hired by BSU)

Chris Peterson

Dan Hawkins (when hired at BSU)

Gary Patterson

Kevin Sumlin

Gene Chizik

Chip Kelly

For every one of those success stories I can list at least 10-20 failures. Can UNT afford to take those odds in hiring their next coach?

Guess what, the same can be said for hiring a name coach. Your response is pretty weak. I could've also named many more assistants that have become successful HC's.

You're on the Levitt bandwagon, correct? I believe he was an assistant prior to being hired at USF. Wonder how or where he learned to be a head coach?

I assume the reference was to the fact that Todd Dodge helped Gary Pinkell install Mizzou's spread offense.

I'm sure Mizzou got some ideas from him, but to say he taught the offense is ridiculous. Christensen put together that offense using concepts from many different offenses. Air Raid, Run and shoot, etc.

The Mizzou coaches clinic each year features a keynote speaker which is usually an extremely successful high school coach. Coach Dodge spoke at the 04 clinic because of his record of success and his relationship with the Mizzou coaches.

And for everyone you name I can name at least 10 failures. Let's start the list with Todd Dodge and put an asterisk by his name since he never was even an assistant in college football.

I prefer to call it the "Jim Leavitt Bulldozer" than a bandwagon. Jim Leavitt ain't no band leader.

But that is not the question here. The question is can UNT afford to make yet another risky hire at this point in the program?

I agree...they probably got an base outline of how Dodge ran his offense but making it dynamic and FBS level was totally done at Mizzou.

I don't believe they can. Leavitt is obviously no guarantee but I would rather take my chances on someone who has done it before rather than an unknown commodity at this point in the NT program.

...he would quit to become Iowa's AD.

I know people love Hayden Fry, and I can understand why, because he is one of the high points of North Texas football.

But why do we obssess over him? The world of college football is totally different than it was then. Yes some of his ideas, especially engaging the community are a good idea, especially from the role of AD, which is what he also was. The football coach more than anything needs to recruit, teach, adjust, win.

Alexander the Great's army steamrolled most of the world, but if the US Army tried to copy him now, we would find horse calvary and the sarissa spear a little lacking. College football isn't the same, Denton isn't the same, hell, people aren't the same anymore. A new coach should be looking forward, not backwards.

Every hire is a risky hire, Hind sight is 20/20. Look at Nebraska, a storied program, which had two or three bad hires. Hell take a look at Notre Dame, perhaps the top college job in America. They paid BIG MONEY to Ty Willingham and Charlie Weis and still lost. The Brian Kelly hire is still up in the air. Not sure if it's a good hire or not!

My point is the Mean Green Nation just has to wait and see if Rick V chooses someone that can turn this thing around. I'm not sure if it's Leavitt, Fran, Leach, Stoops, Canales or Joe Paterno (I don't think he'd come, but at least extend an offer) is the Person to lead the Mean Green out of the cellar in the SBC. But NONE of the are guaranteed success.

I just hope for RV's job security, he makes a good choice! Because if he makes the wrong choice, he will be out the door before the next football coach.

Just curious. Did you become a season ticket purchaser BECAUSE Todd Dodge was hired? If so, why?

Hey SGF! Thanks for the PM. You are such a progressive.

Albeit I have several TCU friends here in the West O' Plex, I'll still wish the Aztec good luck this Saturday over in Fort Worth.

BTW, Amon Carter Stadium beginning next Fall will take on a complete new look as they begin their dramatic re-do of their stadium after Saturday. TCU is planning to move up and stay in the Top 25; seems they sorta' like being in that atmosphere.

Huh??

What 2 or 3 bad hires would that be?

Pederson fired Solich who was 9-3 and then named Bo Pelini who was the DC as the interim coach for the bowl game. After Pelini won the bowl game Pederson fired him and hired Bill Callahan.

Callahan was a disaster and was fired along with Pederson. Tom Osborne came back to NU and rehired Pelini (after interviewing Leavitt) as the head coach.
