Canales is going to make this a tough decision. I like what I see the last two games.

Remember, who had really heard of Gary Patterson before he was elevated to Head Coach? We all know who he is now.

The season isn't up...but I have been a Canales supporter since he was named HC.....I could change my mind, as others might, depending on the rest of the season. I gotta say....I think this guy has what it takes...lets see the competition. And, btw, Mama C gives him big extra credit, I saw her video from USF.

I'd love to know what he's thinking about assistants he'd bring in - of course I don't expect him to say anything about that nor should he - but I'd love to know -

Agree 100%.

Does the fact that USF named their RB coach interim HC (and not OC, Mike Canales) when Leavitt was fired concern anyone? How about Canales referring to his "25 years of notes" for advice on how to be a HC? Or the fact that he's remained with the same organization for longer than three years only twice in his 25-year career?

I think it is great that Canales is so open and enthusiastic campaigning to be hc of the Mean Green. I don't think the last game hurt his chances at all, a blow out loss would have about eliminated him; but at the same time it did not vault him into a leadership position. A lot depends on who is available and how much NT is willing to spend. With Canales' performance thus far, he certainly is a very serious candidate. Would you chose Canales at Dodge's salary, Leavitt at a $500K or Leach at $1M if all were interested? No easy answers, but I do think if Canales continues to impress that he has to be favored unless NT goes for a bigger splash name coach. I can't see NT going for a relatively unknown assistant, no matter from what school, over Canales if he does well in the next two games.

At this point(which may change as the season goes forward) I would take Canales and use the savings to go after quality assistants.

I'm in the Fran camp, but with that said.....

You can't ignore what Canales has done in 2 weeks. The kids are responding well to him & his style. My thought is, why hire Leavitt??? Canales was an original member of that staff. He's seen how it's done and what it takes to turn a program from nothing into something. I think it would really be stupid to waste money on Leavitt at hopes of keeping Mike. If you want Leavitt, just hire Canales and be done with it. I'd be fine with that........

i beleive that Fran or Leavitt would probably come here wanting to repair their image and move on as soon as possible to a higher profile, more lucrative program. Canales may view it a little differently and have more attachment to UNT with it being his first head coaching gig........... but who knows ?

And Canales wouldn't? Seriously those stances need not to apply because just about 99.9% of coaches out there are looking to move up to better positions if they don't get paid the way they think what is deserved.

I see everybody making statements that the kids are responding to him etc...and that is all well and good but we need to look at the big picture here. Is this something that lasts for a full season and beyond? I guess it is all a mystery but I really lean towards getting a guy who is proven and has a been there done that type of resume.

He's sold me with his enthusiasm and passion. Hire him as permanent HC.

You have your opinion and I have mine........ let's leave it at that.

Awesome! Who cares about things like HC experience, recruiting success and winning when you've got enthusiasm and passion?

Ask SF 49ers fans how hiring a passionate, enthusiastic interim HC is turning out for them this season.

Great points, and it points out how many fans on this board don't like real change and are ready to follow their emotions and not their brains. Canales had several critics out there and did not seem to be missed when he left schools but we shall see. We don't seem to need great but just nearly good enough for poor old North Texas.

King, you would have never thought that from the welcome Canales received here in January. I mean his resume was beyond reproach, even by those who are railing against him now. Look, I agree we need to do a thorough and diligent search. But my point in this post is how fast his credibility has dwindled with some here who are railing against him, yet some of these same posters wanted Rick to hand him the reins before he ran his first drill on the Darrel Dicky Practice Field.

Hey I not really trying to knock Canales, I just think we need a clean slate as far as a HC goes and we should be careful what we ask for. I think this time around we need a star-studded coach. We should do an extremely diligent search. The extreme jumps one way or the other are because people are desperate for wins.

You make good points Tony. I'll have to say that Canales is my sentimental favorite at this point, but I have wondered this: Since I saw him coach what I considered a very good game last night, I'm wondering if my judgment isn't affected by how bad some of the previous coaching looks by comparison.

In the big picture, I hope the decision makers give serious consideration to a larger number of coaches than I'm seeing talked about here. There's always the possibility that we'll make an offer to some who will refuse it (not saying either that it would be due to our "small time thinking", but some candidates have a job in mind before they interview in places where they're not serious about taking a position; maybe bidding up their services).

Don't forget they've proven they can get fired as head coach too or they would all still be employed.

I don't see how a retread is going to be "the answer" for the last 30 years of apathy. Howard Schnellenberger won a national championship so he certainly was "star-studded" and that hasn't translated into FAU being a national power.

I am not saying we should not hire someone who has been a head coach on more than an interim basis. I am just saying don't discredit Canales if he can get it done solely because he was brought in during Todd Dodge's last year.

I think discredit is the wrong word, those not on this site need to get excited about something and a named coach is a great step and one I think is needed with our new stadium. I want a clean slate, I want some big sponsors I want more big donors and I don't see Canales doing it. Even beating Troy would not matter. Beating Kansas State could raise some eyebrows, and would be great for Canales resume.

I'm not trying to knock Canales either. Yes, I raved about him when he was being considered as OC and he was easily my top choice...for OC. Nothing he's done since he's been here has made me think any less of him or his coaching abilities. I think Canales is an exceptional coach and that we're lucky to have him. I'm just not convinced he's our best option for HEAD coach. I'm certainly not ready to proclaim that we've found our guy and need to end the search immediately. Now, if we've interviewed and evaluated other top applicants and they've all turned us down or don't seem to be good fits, I could be convinced to give Canales a chance.

Viagra couldn't even prop him up anymore. He is a perfect example of a "Has Been". Should have retired when it was good!
