Has anyone said that you didn't have a good program. I am a euphonium player at Troy University I know that UNT has one of the best schools of music in the country and from what I last heard it had the ONLY euphonium studio people on here are bashing TROY even though we haven't bashed you guys. TROY has a wonderful school of music that is why I chose to go there. So instead of people trying to bash our program why don't you bash those who bash your program!

Here's a little reading material for you:

UNT Music School Webpage

Indiana University holds a candle. Otherwise, you need to look at private schools like Juliard to find better music programs, and forget about Jazz. UNT IS the best Jazz school.

Do not get UNT Alumni started on defending the Music School...

UNT Alum water cooler talk:

cowoker: Hey did you see my alma mater was ranked #10 in the Nation by US News?

me: yeah, well my alma mater has one of the best music schools in the nation! so suck it! Well I think it does...... because it is really hard to find rankings...... but that is what people have told me for years. Ahhhh screw it.... best Music School in the World! We're number 1, we're number 1! Wooooo hooooooo!

Sound familiar to anyone?

I wish that we would sometimes (but not all the time) embrace more of a "football band" concept and less of a "marching wind ensemble" concept. More John Williams, less Alberto Ginastera.

btw, vuvuzelas are loud, too. Just sayin'.

Seriously.....you are onto something....what are the chances of allowing these into the stadium?? Just one vuvuzela takes the place of 20 cheering fans with ease. :D

Don't take it personally buddy...it's just that our music program is honestly our strongest claim to fame in the Academia realm. So..we get a little quick to one-up. The frustration you see is stemming from your band having played louder than ours despite a drastically smaller number of bandmembers (in attendance anyway). We love our band...we just would wish to see them project the loud sound that we know they are capable of making on the field.

Apologist! Now, i want to see you take up for me the next time I get my head handed to me on this forum! Just sayin'......... If the Troy folks can't stand the heat they should go post on their own forum.

Just for the record, I thought the Troy group sounded fine...other than when they played over our alma mater...and I'd like to see the Green Brigade get a bit more "football crowd" friendly as some of the other posters here have mentioned. On the other hand, trying to compare Troy's music school to UNT's well is like trying to compare ... well, you get the drift.

Kram....you got enough people in posse to take up for you if some cretin decides to come knocking on that door. I will keep an eye out for an opportunity to redeem myself.

It is simple:

Fire us up during the game.

Wow us at halftime.

Do we even need to be wowed at halftime? Most of us use that time to stretch our legs and visit the restroom anyway. I'd settle for just firing me up during the game.

You are correct. Alot of music programs have to pound their own chests in order to get noticed since rankings for music schools are so sparse.

But, as I said in my post:

"...America's Best Graduate Schools has been published annually by U. S. News & World Report since 1987. They began ranking graduate jazz programs in 1994 and the UNT Jazz Studies program was ranked number one in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997. After 1997, the publication stopped ranking graduate programs in music..."

This is from the jazz.unt.edu website. No University has a better Jazz studies program. The rest is just conjecture since for instance, a music program could have a fantastic voice department, but a mediocre composition department.

I'm very proud of our Music school and felt threatened by Troy band members so I retaliated violently like a trapped chimpanzee would. Does that make me a bad person? :(

If I recall correctly, the COM was ranked #17 in the last US News Ranking which was many years ago. As most every college in the US has a music department, that is nothing to sneeze at and I also feel it is fairly accurate. What hurts our COM is a lack of funding. You may have 200 trumpet majors but only three or four full time professors of trumpet. A student could complete their entire undergrad degree without studying with a tenure track professor. Anther problem due to the lack of money is the inability to hire "name" professors. Many professors make their "name" because of their employ at North Texas, not before.

While this is very subjective, the first rank of schools would include perhaps Curtis, Julliard, Eastman, New England Conservatory, Indiana and some of the Ivy's. North Texas would belong in the second group, along with Cincinnati, Michigan, Illinois, Florida St, etc.

In New York where I work, I know of a few working classical musicians from North Texas but not many... primarily singers. I can also say that no one shakes in their boots when I tell them I have my undergrad degree from North Texas. In fact, most of them look at me with some sort of amusement! In other words, how did you get from there to here?

But, I know North Texas prepared me well and I am really proud of our school. In fact, I intend to invite the opera theatre to perform next year in NYC so more people can know of our talented students.

PS. No doubt that the UNT jazz is #1.
