A University of North Texas student told police that someone came inside the unlocked apartment that he shares with a roommate between 2 and 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The student said that he and his roommate were both at football practice during that time, and that many of their friends know when they practice and that they leave their door unlocked.

He reported that $3,000 was missing from a drawer in a chest in his bedroom. His roommate had $100 in his room, and it was taken as well, he said.

There was no indication of what the student was doing with that much cash in his apartment.

What is dumber keeping 3000 in cash, or having 3000 in cash and the door open when no one is there. Plus it seems to be public knowledge. Dumb is dumb and it sounds like something questionable was going on with that much cash on hand to begin with.

Gee, we leave our apartment unlocked, our friends know it, they know we play football and are gone from 2pm to 8pm each day, they know we are too stupid to put our money in a bank, etc...and we are surprised we were burglarized.

REALLY?

I think you're all missing the bigger picture here. I used to go to calls almost identical to this one all the time in patrol. Is it possible that this was a case of stupid, layered upon stupid, upon stupid? Yes. Still, tell me when this story starts to sound just a little too convenient to you...

Student keeps door to dorm room unlocked.

Student advertises this fact.

Student plays football at a certain time every day.

Student advertises this fact.

Student keeps money (in large sum) in a drawer.

Student advertises this fact.

Am I saying that it's impossible that this is an example of where carelessness meets naivety meets thief? No. But I've been to one too many scenes where a person was burglarized on the 30th of the month and the thief took exactly the amount of money due in rent. I know, I know, football players don't pay rent...but 3 grand disappears under circumstances perfectly conducive to the thief's purposes?

I'll also put myself down as sorry the student was burglarized. I'll also put myself down with Emmitt as saying the story sounds odd, for several reasons. Here's hoping things turn out alright, and that said student (I'm still not sure whether this is a UNT varsity football player or an intramural player) enrolls in "finance 101" or whatever they call the student financial counseling program.

and if the burgular keeps up with the football team, he/she now knows that they lock the gates at practice and there's no chance of the players in question coming home.....it's the perfect crime!

I know this story sounds odd. Yes, very stupid to have $3,000.00 stolen because they didn't lock their door. However, to question why someone has $3,000.00 because they're a football player? Give me a break!!! How many of us on this board have a sum of money in their house for emergencies? Maybe this football player has been wisely counseled to save money by his parents and not be the average kid who spends everything he makes. This tread is full of stereotype!! I'm sure even a football player can save $3,000.00 working over the summer. I don't know this football players work habits, study habits, and other disciplines, but to imply there's something wrong with saving $3,000 is folly.

I'm sure the player that was burglarized will lock his door from this point forward and not advertise that he's saving money for whatever purpose. I might tell my friends if I'd worked hard to save $3,000.00 for something special. It's hard work saving money these days and I'd be proud of myself too, and I might slip up and tell a few friends. I've occasionally left my house unlock also. Based on this story I'll of course tighten this up and not leave my house unlock.

Hopefully our football player has the ability to earn another $3,000.00 in our great country and will not suffer to much embarrassment over this situation. I'm sure he'll learn a hard lesson. I could ill afford to lose $3,000.00. Hopefully they'll find out how burglarized apartment and prosecute to the fullest extent under the law.

No one's questioning why he'd have $3,000. We're wondering why he'd have $3,000 in cash laying around his house. Who does that?

I know how the poor guy feels. Someone stole the firewood off my front porch last night. If I would have caught them I would have shot them dead.

Like if the apocolypse came? I have $40 on me right now and that's a rarity. I think it's a generational thing to keep huge sums of cash laying around.
