Texas Ties

A total of 84 players on the top-10 teams in this week’s polls, hail from the Lone Star State. Of course, Stephen F. Austin, in Nacogdoches, Texas, has 77 players from the state, including 15 from North Texas. Seven Texans are on rosters of five other top-10 teams, including two at top-ranked Appalachian State, which won three consecutive national championships from 2005-07. The Mountaineers are coached by Jerry Moore, a native of Bonham, Texas and a former head coach at North Texas and at Texas Tech. No. 2 Jacksonville State has one player on its roster from Texas as does William & Mary. Wofford has a player from Arlington and Eastern Washington has two Texans on its roster, including its starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, who was a two-year starter at SMU before transferring. Additionally, No. 15 James Madison is coached by Mickey Matthews, a native of Andrews, Texas. He coached the Dukes to the 2004 national championship and to an upset at Virginia Tech earlier this season.
