Oregon football: Former coach Mike Bellotti says he would listen to overtures

  Quote

Former Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti, who earlier this week was tabbed by a newspaper as a potential candidate for the open job at Minnesota, didn't rule out a return to the coaching ranks during an interview Thursday.

"I don't know; we'll see," said Bellotti, now an analyst for ESPN. "I like what I'm doing. The travel is a little crazy, but I'm dealing with it. If the right job came up, I would listen. But right now I like doing what I'm doing."

Yeah, he's probably a long shot, but no more so than some of the other names being mentioned. Besides, any coach willing to consider the Minnesota job is almost assuredly willing to consider the North Texas job, right? I don't know what his idea of the "right job" is but he did spend five years at Chico State back in the 80s.

I hope there's sarcasm in your question. I think Bellotti could be as far fetched as Leach. I'd love it, just don't think it's realistic.

An up-and-coming assistant is the most likely choice for UNT. We need a guy who wants to make his name here, not someone who is burned out or comes with a lot of skeletons. I would love to have Bellotti come here, but I don't know if that is a possibility. Willie Fritz is an interesting name and a guy who I think deserves a shot at this level. I'm sure everyone wants someone who has done it a the FBS level, but the guy is 136-52 as a head coach and won two JUCO national titles.

Not to besmirch anyone who has been a successful head coach below the FBS level but we are in too deep and have to much at stake to take a chance on those as long as there are some outstanding former FBS coaches available.

After six disastrous losing seasons I'm afraid that Rick V would be run out of town on a rail if a lower ranked coach or coordinator were hired and failed; and I'd likely lead the charge.

Understandable, I would just like to see someone who is hungry enough to make this program successful. If you hire someone from a BcS school, they might not be as invested as someone looking to make a name for their self.

Catching up on a few days, it is clear we have found unique reasons not to hire everyone. This was one of my favorites.
