A fellow UNT alum just the other day said if we had hired one of Fry's assistants after Iowa hired him we probably would have never had to spend over a decade in NCAA D1-AA, and it could have been us who did the Boise thing instead of...Boise. NOTE: Bill Snyder of Kansas State had been one of Fry's assistants at North Texas.

GMG!

I agree with this because every time I see Iowa play on national TV the announcers always make it a point to mention and link Hayden Fry and how many of his assistants went on to bigger and better things including Kirk Ferentz himself. The man had something...it is just a shame he couldn't build whole legacy at NT.

= definition of inexperienced head coach

There are plenty of assistants with tons of experience at the level of football we play and better that I'm sure would consider the job. The level of football we play being lower Bowl Subdivision.

I should have been more careful in my wording.

Before coming here Todd Dodge was an inexperienced head coach. He wasn't an assistant at his previous job and he didn't have experience at the college head coach level. An experienced assistant (at our level or better) would have been a better call in retrospect.

Never heard the term "moribund" used that many times! Did I hear him correctly when he said that NT was a career killer? He did say that he loved Bower but wasn't sure if Bower would come here. On Leach, Norm said that if 20 jobs were offered to Leach, that NT would be number 20 on his list.

It is a career killer.

Never really cared for Norm, and like most local media, if it's not Big 12 it's not big time football. Hiring the young, inexperienced assistant is what we just finished up with. NO THANKS! We need experience at this point. There are enough out of work "name" guys that would love to recruit Texas for our new stadium.

Norm has interviewed June Jones and Gary Patterson on his show multiple times. Other than the occasional reference by the Musers, Norm is the only respected media personality who has mentioned that we exist more than once a year.

To play the other side of that coin, other than Fry, nobody really had a career when they got here.

...this is a different time. Decent budget, facilities that don't suck. I just get a feeling this time will be differnet, because we're doing things different for a change.

Coaching careers that were not killed at NT.

Jerry Moore,

Kitching,

Kragthorpe,

Deloach,

Simon,

Dickey,

Can't remember the strength and conditioning coach that went to the Jets?

And we told Paul Johnson No back in '91. He damn sure wanted the job and would have gone on to succeed as he has done.

I wonder if Norm would have had such a low opinion for up and comer coaching suggestions for UTSA a couple of years ago, or FAU 11 years ago, or USF 16 years ago?

I think we were talking about head coaches. Moore is the only one on your list who went to be a head coach at a larger program. Simon went on to be a NFL position coach and Dickey is a bottom rung mid-major OC.

See, to me, that list shows the exact opposite of what you support. Simon coaches high school football now because no one will hire him. Dickey has been an OC at Utah State and UNM, of which he will soon be looking for another job soon. Even Jerry Moore never had a lick of success as a FBS coach. Now, your assistants that got listed have definitely sprung upward--but the head coach position here has been a mortuary for their careers after UNT. Of course, that has everything to do with funding and support before now. A new stadium and funding with it will improve our position greatly. From Norm's view, without following this program much over the last few years or having any reason whatsoever to do so, I am sure he thinks that Boise and USF and TCU all hired great young, unproven head coaches and they all have worked for those schools, so UNT should follow. The only issue there is that our situation is nothing like any of those other three. Boise has great civic support, TCU has money, tradition, and recruiting, and USF has conference affiliation and recruiting to take advantage of for a newer coach. The only advantage that those schools share with UNT is recruiting, and since we are one of ten schools in Texas, which isn't counting out of state competition for recruits, we really haven't ever been able to make that a real plus here at UNT. We will never have the civic support here of Boise (ever), nor the money of TCU (ever), but we have some tradition, a great new facility coming next season, and the recruiting opportunity here that would make your point about hiring a bigger name make sense much more than doing the typical UNT hiring of just a guy for the HFC position. IN reality here, it seems very clear and simple to me. We either show we want football to be a bigger player than it ever has been at UNT by hiring and paying for a proven coach and staff, or we tell everyone that this new stadium will be awesome on the FCS level because we really just don't want to move upward.
