We have had alot of talk recently about who we all want as the next coach at UNT. There have been alot of names thrown around with varying degrees of probability. What I want to know is who you think we will hire.

I think the reality is that we will go with someone who is looking for a 2nd chance ala Frank Solich, Schnelly, Larry Coker, etc… That would narrow it down to Bower, Bowden, or Leavitt. Bowden seems to have his sights set higher. I am afraid that Leavitt might price out of our range. I think it might be Bower as we can afford him, he has ties to RV, and he has head job experience :)

Fran fits that bill as well, and is my first choice across the board.

That said, it will probably be Bower... which would also be the most give-up, unimaginative hire possible. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

Bowden is ancient and you can afford Leavitt. Bowden is too old to be a workaholic and that is what it will take to turn the program around.

Affording Leavitt is simple math...

You have two home games left. If RV pulls the trigger and hires Leavitt, he can be on the ground in Denton in short order. That should create enough buzz to sell another 10K tickets per game times 2, times $25 average ticket for an extra $500,000 in ticket revenue plus additional concession and merchandise sales.

Next year if the trend continues and you sell an additional 10K ticket per game time 6 home games (I would work to get 7 home games next year), well...you can do the math from there.

Terry Bowden in ancient? WTF

Terry Bowden was born the same year Leavitt was.

If Bowden is ancient and too old to be a workaholic, what does that say about Leavitt?

I would LOVE to have Leavitt here. I don't understand what you're trying to accomplish, because whatever you're trying to do, I think it's alienating people on the concept of hiring the guy you seem to be pushing so aggressively.

Since Leavitt is making zero money now because he is unemployed, he wouldn't have any leverage in negotiating a contract. I think other school would recruit against NT by bringing up the South Florida incident.

I'm thinking Fran has a real shot here. He still resides in Texas and has run 2 major Texas programs. The dude knows what DFW recruiting is all about. He's a successful HC with skins on the wall. It's almost a perfect fit, IMO.

After thinking about this, my four most logical in descending order would be:

Jim Leavitt

Terry Bowden

Dennis Franchione

Jeff Bower

Would you please reference when this scenario has taken place before? You can't change systems mid season, so will the fans come watch Leavitt watch the game? Beside, Leavitt, though a great choice, would not be enough of a splash right now to our casual fans (people on this board are not average nor casual fans) and be able to sell 10K extra tickets. We would be lucky to get 4K additional right now in the scenario you describe. Better to have the new coach be in the new stadium for his first game, just for the phsychological thing of "starting anew".

Thread asks a tough question. After hearing the press conference, I do NOT think it will be Canales. I think Leavitt could be good, but he probably has too much baggage and RV needs a safe hit right now. I like Carthal, but ever causal fan I've mention him to has asked who or from where or said we just had a project. I think he's good, but far too few in the DFW area even know where WTAM to be impressed with a coach from there.

Ruling out some of the pie in the sky choices, right now I think we end up with Bower based on the choices I've read. I read here a lot of negatives about him, but they are mostly pretty vague. I haven't been able to read enough about him to form an intelligent opinion.

But while RV does read this forum, I doubt he will make a choice based on our opinions!

It would depend on how quickly RV would hire him. You have to keep in mind Leavitt hired Canales as his OC twice. I think the pair could make some immediate and significant changes to the situation with the staff that is now in place. Also, keep in mind Jim was co-defensive coordinator with Bobby Stoops at Kansas State, so Jim knows defense.

It certainly would help if they win in Bowling Green as well as a quick hire.

A reboot might be in order here.

Sorry, my inner 13 year old just can't leave well enough alone.

I don't think this will be much of a search. I think Bower is the front runner and the rest will be show. Bowden wins where he goes and not just wins. He kills! Leavitt has had some nice success at SF and Canales would like to coach with him again. But, it sounds like Bower to me. What a shame!

Well I think that both Leavitt and Bowden have had great head job experience in the past and both look forward to more head jobs at D1A Universities in the near future. They have given and given to their past universities until it hurt. We could easily hand the job to them.

I think based on all we have been told, and all that we know thus far...it will be Jeff Bower. If you think about it he does appear to at least be a good fit for NT, so that may not be a bad choice.

Interesting, someone had mentioned Frank Solich...that might be very interesting...

Okay, Troy guy here but I come in peace.

Do not sell yourself short on Terry Bowden (literally or figuratively). At UNA, one of the top DII programs in the country he is not winning like he should. They have transfers from all the SEC schools and in his 2 years he is losing the games he should win. UNT is a great place to be, facilities, recruiting, student enrollment, it's all there. I think Bower, Leavitt or Franchione would all be good choices. Bower is good, he got a raw deal, Trooper Taylor? I hope that was a joke, he is a cheerleader at Auburn who dresses somewhat as a football coach. Good luck, look forward to seeing you guys in a few weeks.

Completely agree. I am afraid that we end up hiring Bower.

regardless of who we hire, it will be someone with successful head coaching experience who was not previously fired for abusing his players or sexual misconduct. r.v. cannot afford to take a chance on an o.c. or retread h.c. with baggage.

Can someone explain to me what's so bad about Bower? I don't know much about him. If Fran, Leach, Levitt, and Bowden aren't interested would he then be a decent hire? Wouldn't you rather have Bower with HC experience than a young guy getting his first HC job? Again, I don't know much about Bower.

I think it will be Bower or Norvell.

Bower had 14 consecutive years without a losing season.

While Bower doesnt excite me, I, like many think he will be the hire.

In a perfect world we would lure in Fran or a Bowden, but I just dont see the money. And yes I know the Bowden is currently making less than Todge made, but I have to think that he is padding his resume, waiting for the next SEC/ACC job to open up...like the Terps.

I wish it would be any one of the following

Fran

Pasqualoni

any Bowden

JL Smith

Leavitt

I have a Chris Matthews moment with the possibility of the 2 bolded coaches.
