Always delightful, but I really wasn't trying to joke around or come off aggressively.

If Charlie has a guy he's thinking of highly enough that he prefers him to the exclusion of all the listed possibilities, I'm honestly and politely curious to know who it is.

The problem is...the none of the above option was kind of already given when Harry said to add your own option. Hell, half the names on there were added because of suggestions.

This seems to be more a popularity contest, or who has heard of this guy most, instead of who fits our exact needs. RV said in his press conference we need someone willing to meet the fans and help sell the program (this is not Leach) and someone who won't break the bank (several of the names listed would).

He said he did expect to have to pay more to get a quality, experienced winning coach.

If he doesn't elevate Canales after seeing what he can do on his own, I expect a Bower, Leavitt, Fran, or similar out of work former winning HC.

Bottom line: We need a "name" that will excite the fanbase and sell tickets and club seats.

Yes! As great an up and comer Canales might be, he would still not excite our fanbase and sell tickets and club seats. Has he even proven himself as our offensive coordinator many might ask.

I don't mean this in an argumentative way, but really? None of the name guys OR a coordinator/assistant from another program OR potentially retaining the interim guy?

Who would you want to see us bring in? Is there someone else you've got in mind?

Jerry Moore, perhaps?

No, bottom line is we need a coach who can get North Texas to win games.

Going for pure "splash" right now would be a huge, huge mistake.

Yet in many ways aren't we hiring a figure-head, general, the face of MG football but it will be all his assistants (especially his Coordinators) who will make or break this program especially in each of their roles in recruiting? When Fry was around he was the name and face of MG football everyone around Texas knew (and they knew him from his 10 year career at SMU). Fry's assistants would cull out the players he wanted and then Coach Fry would go in for the close of the sale, but most parents of those recruits knew who that guy from North Texas was sitting on their living room sofas, too. He had had 10 years of coverage statewide from the old SWC media network & outlets.

We need an impact hire to go with this impact stadium and this moment in time for North Texas to make a knockout hire will not happen again with the present criteria of hiring a new coach to make his debut in a new football stadium.

UNT needs to listen to those who have seen more than just Bottom 25 success around here and then look back (again) at the kind of hire that made this program go places it had never gone before on a national basis and even a ranked one as well. We lost that coach to the Big 10 and the College Football Hall of Fame. Anyone in Denton & beyond seen anything like that since with our program? Still kind of so-oooo North Texas'esque that we still can't find anything on campus to name after the one coach ever associated with UNT that went to the highest mountain tops of NCAA success. Oh well......

Even RV said don't expect 9-3 next year. It will be September 2011 before the new guy can win any games for NT. Before then we need ticket sales and club seats to be sold, a known coach can do that before winning a single game.

I agree with 93-98 here. We've already made a "splash", "known coach" hire. His name is Todd Dodge.

The new stadium is going to sell itself out in the first year. I'm more concerned with finding someone who can win games. That way, those sell outs are sustained and don't drop off after the excitement of the new stadium wears off.

If we are going to put high profile big money coaches like Leach in this fictitious poll, why can't we add Chris Peterson. If we could hypotheticlly afford Leach, then we could afford Peterson too. Minnesota seems to think it would cost about $3 millon a year to smuggle him out of Boise.

Also, I don't think we should be looking at coordinators or lower level head coaches. We have Patterson and Jones in DFW too. In all of college football you can count the number of head coaches that have taken non BCS teams to BSC bowl on one hand, and both of these guys are in that small exclusive group. In my opinion, we need a proven big name coach that can recruit against these guys and build a team that can compete with them.

There is an arms race in college football, but there is a mini arms race in DFW, and I believe all three programs can benifit. None more then UNT, because we are the largest, and have the greatest potential. But I don't think we can do it without a proven name coach with a history of winning.

Lets get this right.

I like coach Fran, Leavitt, Leach, and Peterson, if we could afford the last two. After that, I don't know.

Plain & Simple:

No one on this board has said we need another splash hire from any Texas HS.

When you get a name (splash) hire for a coach with prior success at an FBS school, we have to think (or at least) hope he can make it happen even in Denton, Texas, America, too?

So you want an up and comer, then, to be another experiment at North Texas? Been there--done that for most my adult life except for one exception and I don't need to tell you who that was.

100% agree, the Dodge hire got us on the National news and ESPN but you see where we sit.

I'm okay with Bower, his USM team kicked our butt in the 2004 New Orleans Bowl but I think Bowden would be the best choice. With his father and brothers in the coaching business, he would have connections all over the country.

Jim Leavitt WILL BE the next head coach at UNT. Good luck!!

If this happens, I'll have to change my boxers.

Leach is not my first choice & neither are the aforementioned. But you're damn right, I'd take ANY of the three.

And Leach locked a player in a closet. You still want him though, right?

considering whose kid he was....hell yes...would like to see his DAD locked in closet also !

Im not saying I'd be opposed to Leach, but if people want to use the accused assaults as reasons why not to hire Mangino or Leavitt, then you have to point out Leach's issue.

why can't we add Chris Peterson.

Peterson will not leave BSU. He has ZERO to gain by leaving.

All this "next coach" talk is boring. Let's get to talking about who's going to replace him.

I think our next next coach should be the total opposite of what our next coach is gonna be.

It is ok to banter around all the "name" coaches.

You forget one big aspect......................

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

How much $$$$ is NT willing to spend when in the past their purse strings are tighter than you know what??

There is nothing wrong with dreaming, drinkin' the kool aide and imagining that NT's coffers are full of cash to dole out to coaches who have made two, three, four, five and six times more than what NT currently pays. What sort of pay cut do you think Coach DeLoach took moving from UCLA to NT?? Think about it. NT still has to pay Coach Dodge for 1 1/2 more years.....regardless of whatever is in the contract & I am sure nobody knows the details of Coach's contract.

These three and a half years must have seemed like the trials of Job.

We can only wish Coach our best.

Dodge made our players better young men, Leavitt will physically assault them... can we find the opposite of them combined?

I think I would have to take a good long look at Jim Leavitt, Tyrone Nix and Jay Norvell. TCU's Bumpas is a little older and may not want to move at this point. So, why not look at TCU's OC Anderson? I think any one of the first three would be a fantastic hire.
