I like most of you want Dodge to be successful, but we are at a point where even the most optimistic of NT's fans has to concede that 7 wins will not happen. I can't remember the last time we won back to back games. It's just not logical to believe we can go 6-1 to finish this season.

At some point UNT will be getting a new football coach. I know the best coaches cost big money. Paying coaches big money is something our university has historically been unable or unwilling to do. Is there a limit on the amount of money the BOR can pay the football coach? Can anyone provide some insight into this issue?

I think the answer to this question will help us identify the coaching candidates we should focus on.

Vito said 2004 was the last time a UNT football team won back to back games.....6 years ago just to win back to back games! Do you know how crazy that sounds for a major division team? And our average attendance has increased during that period.

As for what the BOR can expend on a football coaching salary I think they realize the price of poker at the top level has gone up salary-wise for someone with any experience. We have seen what going economical has done. The intangible is how much money donors can supplement the BOR's allotment?

Are fans willing to give to get an experienced coach to UNT??

The BOR is limited on which sources they can use toward athletics. They are limited to their portion of the student fee--next year to be the dedicated athletics fee, and outside donations. No tuition dollars and no state dollars.

Somebody please correct me if that's wrong.

The drop from the Rice game to the UL game last night was almost 6,000 fans. Just estimating $10 in tickets or concessions lost per person, which is conservative, is almost $60,000 lost last night. Attendance will continue to go down the rest of the season and UNT will lose their shirt on the Kansas State game contract guarantee because no one will be there because of another hapless season.

doing nothing about Dodge is costing this program serious money and it has gone on to long.

That being said, we don't necessarily have to get a BIG NAME coach to get positive results here. A lot of great/top notch assistants and coordinators make what TD does. And remember there are only a 120 of these FBS jobs. That being said I look at a guy like Robb Akey who is a fairly young and very experienced coach has become very successful at Idaho in his first 3 seasons and his salary is pretty much the same as TD's. If you ask me, there's no reason why we can't snag him from Idaho because we can raise his salary, he'd be coming to a very big school, new stadium and in the center of a recruiting hotbed.

This is where your AD's make their money. It is yet to be seen how RV will go about in his head coaching search but getting a BIG NAME coach isn't necessary if you want to see positive results on the field.

Really? You are comparing the attendance of a C-USA in-state home opener to ULaLa on TX/OU weekend? And you are blaming Dodge for the drop? Just sayin'...

So, what if we go 5-2 to finish the regular season and win a bowl game? Does that count toward the 7 wins? I've been curious about this, though I don't really expect us to get into that situation.

I would...it was hell just bringing one person to the game with me. Last game I had a bunch. The reason... they didn't care to watch "dodge ball".

I think it depends on which experienced coach they want to bring in. I think there are fans who won't just start handing over more money before they know who the next coach is.

If North Texas can bring in Chris Peterson from Boise State, I'm sure many supporters will give more, we will win, and attendance will go up.

As Texas Tech fans can tell you, hiring an experienced winning coach isn't always a 100% guarantee of winning. Tommy Tuberville was a great find to replace Leach, but Tech lost to Iowa State this weekend by 14 and are now 2-2. Think Tech fans are happy with their investment?

So you think we will have more fans show up next weekend vs ARK State ?

Sorry, but he's not going anywhere. He's got a perfect situtation in Boise. We need to go after Jim Leavitt.

I'd be on board with that move. Leavitt was actually born in Texas but the thing I like more about him was his loyalty to USF when bigger schools/offers came calling, coupled with his ability to take a start-up program to unprecedented success. The incident that led to his dismissal was serious but we're not going to get someone of his caliber without a few blemishes on the resume.

There are a few others that interest me as well, but I'll wait until we actually have a vacancy to have that discussion.

I'd love to have Leavitt but I'd have to do some in depth research into his "situation" because you can't have that bit us in the butt a year or so down the line. Coach Canalas should be able to provide some great insight into him. You're also right that it's too early to start worrying over names. We'll have plenty of choices if the time comes. I just hope we'll be able to offer higher salaries for a head coach and the assistants ... whether it's the current staff or a new staff.

Tuberville will have tech back soon enough. He's a west coast off. And defense guy who's got a te built for the spread.

We would do well to remember this. While I agree we have to make a change, that change will start yet another rebuilding period.

If Gary Anderson can lead Utah State to win more games than they ever had since 2002 in only his first year(4 wins), and nearly beat Oklahoma and route BYU in his second year, and with Dickey's offensive recruits by the way, then we can find someone out there as well. The question remains how early NT's administration wants to start should they decide to make the change? And I don't believe for one moment the cupboard will be bare. There should be plenty of talent for the new staff get get the ball rolling.

Couldn't agree with you more. Gary Anderson is a great example but in another thread I mentioned Robb Akey and what he's doing up in Idaho. I'm sure Idaho is a great place to settle but as far as the football program is concerned it's not something you brag about playing in the Kibbie Dome. Akey makes the same money as TD so I bet we could snag him from Idaho, increase his salary by 50-75k a year and he'd be in a situation that puts himself in a situation to succeed such as a school 3x bigger, in a region that is a recruiting hotbed and a new stadium with new facilities around. The cupboard is bare is the worst argument one can make and when TD took over the cupboard wasn't bear. It was just a piss poor excuse of justifying TD's inability to coach.

No way...guy hasn't proven himself as a HC just yet. Going 4-4 in the WAC last year as a third year HC is not what UNT needs.

I only want Leach for a few reasons,

1. Instant splash for this program, will get us all over ESPN and other media outlets.

2. Leach plus new stadium = Better Recruiting.

3. We already run a spread offense, so we have the talent in place (unlike when you bring in a coach with vastly different offense, Dickey Ball run vs Dodge Ball Pass) and we don't have to waist two years learning a new system and getting those recruits in.

i have no clue what type of person he is, and i honestly don't think he would come here, but their is no dobut that the splash he would make here would be a tremendous asset for the University.

The man has won in Idaho playing in the Kibbie Dome. He had a he was 3-21 his first two years but went 8-5 last year and is so far 3-2 I think. I'm not saying he will be the Mean Green Jesus but if you want a clear upgrade with having similar salary and with being a legitimate FBS coach, a guy like Akey is a solid hire IMO.

And going 4-4 isn't that bad when you annually have to play Boise State, Nevada, and Fresno State. I don't know I have been a fan of Akey after what he had done last year and how he's turning that Idaho program around.

Robb Akey had great success at Idaho last year no question. The problem is this is not his first year. With his eight wins last year that brings his record to 11-26 for the first three years at Idaho. If he had three wins in his first two years here this beautiful new stadium would be empty except for the diehards.

Gary Anderson is another who may someday be a Hall of Famer but we can't afford to take that risk.

I believe that we need a proven FBS coach who can attract donors, fans, players and students. We need someone that the Denton area can point to with pride and be willing to support from the gitgo.

There have been about six names trotted out that would definitely fit our need. There may be others that have yet to surface. I hope that we don't take a chance on a high-risk coordinator with no prior head coaching experience this time. We didn't build a $150 million dollar stadium (Plumm got my attention with that one) to poboy a coach for it.
