That is a damn good guess. I'd guess your guess is right.

That's just a guess, though.

Not a bad I guess, I guess. I guess ill be the bad guy here and guess 19- 20.

I guess your guesses are as good as anyone else's guesses. My guess is probably nothing more than... an educated guess.

Thank you for bumping this. I guess the Great West was 32 and Independents were 31, because:

30: SWAC

29: MEAC

Search functionality for these is terrible, so hopefully we can collectively keep tabs on how their rankings shake out.

28. NEC

Yes I can't find anywhere that has a full list of teams/ranks. I guess we will just have to watch this daily

Can the Sunbelt be ranked any higher than 16 in this list?

We're definitely going to be behind the ACC, Big East, Big 12, SEC, Big 10, Pac 10, MWC, A-10, MVC, WAC, Horizon, WCC, C-USA and Colonial. That's 14 right there, and there really isn't any room for any reasonable argument with any of them.

That still leaves the MAC and the MAAC (Siena's league). I think we'd be contenders in either league, though I wouldn't want to have to beat out Siena for an auto-bid.

I think that based on last year's RPI performance, the MAC will still be ranked higher than the SBC, even though a mild homer could make a case for us this year. Last year sucked in OOC for most clubs.

Our league suffered a lot of tough injuries early (Mike Smith at UALR killed their season and Desmond Yates at MTSU was out of commission through OOC play) that crippled our chance at a decent conference RPI. 90% of what will ultimately be the final conference RPI is established before Christmas break. If you've got teams missing critical players at the start of the year, if you've got squads relying on midyear transfers to get eligible, if you've got teams that suck at scheduling, if you've got a lame duck team on their way to D-III, you aren't going to come out looking very good. And we had all of those things last year.

This year should be better. Potentially a lot better, though I wouldn't hold my breath... FIU is going to be a conference RPI killer because they're counting on at least 2 notable recruits that I know of off the top of my head to get eligible for 2nd semester (after OOC play). They'll drop a lot of games early and possibly get a lot better just in time to start getting some wins against SBC teams. ULM looks like they could be epically bad. Troy looks like they've got a rebuilding project on the scale of WW2 Japan in front of them. The teams expected at the bottom of the league this year could really drag us down overall, even with 5 potentially very strong teams at the top and one or two more borderline contenders after them.

Anyway... To answer the question- I don't think anyone is ranking our league higher than 16th going into this year. I could see us 17th easily, I could see us 18th depending on how much they respect some of the leagues that jumped past us last year. We shouldn't be any lower than 19th.

Wow. You know your stuff. Have you ever thought about collaborating on a Sun Belt-themed project?

The thought had crossed my mind.

Where do you think we'll land in a conference preseason ranking? If you've got some hard hitting analysis to contribute here, I might just be able to come up with a way to use your expertise and my ability to talk really fast for the entertainment and education of the SBC basketball masses.

Now that is the definition of a tease!

Wow! That was a heck of a response. The "correct" response to my question was to deliver a "Can we, will we?" post, but your's was actually much more informative, useful & entertaining.

Who says a lame attempt at humor isn't worth something on this board!!!!

Wait a minute... I missed a "Can We? Will We?" setup?

I can't believe how horribly unprepared I am for basketball season. Somebody fire Johnny Jones!

We shouldn't be behind the Summit, the Ivy, the America East, the Big West, or the Ohio Valley conferences. That gets us up to 19th, and that shouldn't be an issue.

I also think we shouldn't be behind the Big Sky or the Southern conferences. That would put us at 17. Any lower than 17 or 18, and they're relying too heavily on last year's RPI results. They don't seem to be doing that so far.

We ought to be a coin flip for 17th and 16th with the MAAC. That's fair and legit based on a down year (RPI wise) last year and the past 5-6 years collectively.
