I think you will see dramatic drop off in interest if that happens. The casual CFB fan without a passionate attachment to a particular team is a small market. College Basketball found that out the hard way. Your purely market driven model applied to the NFL 40 years ago robs the league of Carolina Panthers, Houston or Tennessee franchises, Baltimore or Cleveland franchise, the Jaguars an maybe even Green Bay (if they were poorly managed and never found Brett Farve). Hell even the New Orleans Saints would be on thin ice with hurricane Katrina without the Drew Bree and Sean Patton era.
What I think is best would be about 30-40 FBS teams going back down to FCS. And I think a conference like the MAC just doesn’t belong at the FBS level. And basically any team that has jumped up to FBS after 2000 should be critically examined and forced to go back down if they haven’t met certain criteria in on the field achievement.
I think the fact that he's playing in the bowl game shows 1) he just wants to play and 2) it just shows more of the drive and commitment that's gotten him to where he his.
I'm not gonna' fault him for leaving if they aren't rewarding him with a scholarship and especially if it looks like he isn't going to be in the main rotation next year. That feels like "thanks for bailing us out, now go sit down."
