UC Berkeley will eliminate its baseball, men's and women's gymnastics and women's lacrosse teams after this year and will stop fully funding the national-champion men's rugby team.

The move, announced today, is part of the school's attempt to trim a nearly $13 million athletics-department deficit. The cuts will save $4 million in 2011-12, the school said.

Baseball: NOT A NET REVENUE GENERATING SPORT

I still want a team here someday, but it doesn't pay for itself.

Also it wasn't required for Pac-10 membership. The Pac-10 requires more sports than most conferences. They also dropped rugby down to club level even though it was a break even sport. They cut 2X the amount of men's scholarships (compared to women's) to help with Title IX.

I'd like to see UNT get a baseball team but I don't know how they get funding for one. They'd need some big private donations, I think, to get one going.

Now how much could gymnastics cost? All you need is a saw horse and a couple of chin up bars.

And it's not like you have to feed them.

There's a high rate of injury for gymnastics, I believe. I bet cost for insurance is high. The biggest savings might be the coaching salary and travel costs.
