I seem to remember a woe is us post caused by the coming graduation of our current DT starters:

Shavod Atkins 6-2, 284 SDr.

Kelvin Jackson 6-3, 284 Sr.

One thing I have not researched is how much , if any...our other current roster DT's have played. I welcome anyone with that information. The same applies to any of the lower mentioned players. Otherwise I figure both players will be gone.

Our current roster has:

Soph DT Kyle White, New Orleans McDonogh HS, 6-2, 309 I seem to remember he was injured his freshman year s

he could be or is red shirted one year with 3 years left to play

Fr. DT Richard Abbe Lubbock Monteray 6-4, 300 don't know if he played, if not could be reshirted with 4 years to play.

DT soph, Tevinn Cantly, Arlington Lamar...6-4, 336 if he hasn't played he would have one redshirt year with 3 years to play.

Future prospects;

NT has offers out to two JC DT's.

DT JC Tony Gillespie, Coffeyville CC (3*HS) 6-1, 310

DT JC Sylvester Williams 3* Coffeyville CC 6-3, 310

Both of these JC's have major college offers but they still list NT..and the fact that our two starting DT will be gone, playing time potential might make a difference.

Cantly has already redshirted as a freshman, played (started some games) last year. This is one of his 3 years, unless he's hurt enough for a medical hardship. I've read where he's said to be getting better after the knee surgery, so I'd guess he'll be playing some this year, then have 2 more years.

Cantly is in his third year here and still hasn't shown what he is capable of accomplishing. The guy has incredible potential, including a rare combination of size, speed, and strength. With extreme dedication his final two years could become another Ndamukong Suh that just blasts though offensive linemen at will. What's missing is the weight room commitment and that killer instinct.

I believe that if he had Corbin Montgomery's mindset, this kid would already be highly sought after by the NFL.

If he had Corbin Montgomery's mindset, he'd be illegal.

The manager in our office has a son who played football for Lamar around the same time Cantly did. He has always said Cantly is a "hoss". However, Cantly was never at DT until around the second half of his senior season, and had been playing OL because of them being short handed there. I think a change to a 3-4 alignment midyear created a place for a jumbo sized (for that level) nose tackle, and Cantly found a groove pretty quickly.

It sounds like, listening to our manager, that in those late years of the elder coach Peach's career at Lamar, players were shifted from one position to another so often that it was difficult for some of them to learn one position well (word is that the new coaching staff at Lamar is really improving the program), and I wonder if it would help Cantly at this point if North Texas coaches decide they have guys who can play DE and play Cantly exclusively at tackle. Last night made it sound like they may have someone in Brandon McCoy with the size and athleticism to play DE well enough to bring pressure on the QB as well as stop the run. Also, I think Cantly really doesn't want to play end.

I'd like to see the coaches figure out a way to keep Cantly on campus next summer where he could keep up that the strength and conditioning. I think that, combined with keeping him at DT on the depth chart, could go a long way towards helping him reach the potential that so many see for Tevinn. As far as the killer instinct, he's played well enough at tackle before he came here to make me think he could create havoc in the opponents' backfields.

He'd probably be swatting down airplanes from atop the Empire State Building. Corbin was a beast at 5-10 and 250, Cantly could be a real monster at 6-4 and 320 if he applied similar dedication.
