I truly believe that nobody wants this team to succeed more than Coach Dodge does. I believe in this team. They have what it takes to turn this ship around....this year. Call me an idiot, but I still think we WILL win 7 games.

I hope they do win 7. Mounting injuries will not make it any easier. Which 7 will they win? Kansas State looks very tough, Troy nearly beat Okla St in Stillwater last night, and FIU losy by just 7 to Rutgers.

To me it's an uphill battle but these are the realistic 7 games we need to win:

Army

FAU

ULL

ASU

FIU

WKU

ULM

That allows losses to Troy, Muts, and KSU.

I really thought after attending the Clemson game that we had the chance for a three game sweep going into last night. My heart goes out to Nathan Tune and his family. Even going to sleep last night I could not get the picture of him being carted off out of my mind. This team has made mistakes the last two games (maybe more last night than against Clemson), but their heart and desire are unquestioned. We can not let this game be like the Ohio of last year that I believe set the tone for the season. I watched all the Army game yesterday, and they are very beatable and play to the strength of our defense. I'll be at West Point and at FAU. As long as this team keeps trying I'll keep giving them all the support I can. I am thankful we have Derrick Thompson. I just hate the circumstances under which we must use him. I hope last night was a learning experience for Coach Canales in that you can not put the ball in Riley Dodge's hands in a critical situation. Past history will repeatedly show this to be true. SMU got by far the best SL Carroll playmaker, hands down. :o

You're not alone. Everyone on this board supports our team and coach dodge, obviously. I want very badly to believe they have what it takes to turn this ship around. Aside from the record, there is nothing not to like about the guy and the team.

I like Dodge, and I think a whole lot of other people wanted very badly to see him and the team succeed. But, after how long we've shown what we showed again last night, it's understandable that more than one fan is frustrated. It's also understandable that with that new stadium sitting across the highway, making the same mistakes and losing in the same fashion just isn't going to be good enough for this school. The stadium is a huge investment in the future of this program. The close losses just aren't going to cut it any longer. Good, well coached teams find a way to win those games... see Boise, TCU, West Virginia. There was no lack of opportunity to win last night, and on just about every opportunity, we came up just short, just like last year.

I believe it is absurd to think we can win 7 games. I do think Dodge wants to win more than anyone, he just doesn't have the skills to make it happen. We are basically the same as last year. Maybe slightly better, like a rank of 110 instead of 120. We need another coach that can recruit and execute better.

I think we may win ULL, WKU, and with any luck, ULM. Geez, maybe 4 wins at best? Sad to see, but we didn't look good yesterday. Poor execution, low motivation, and a fairly quiet crowd for a home opener.

I agree with this statement 100% but you are failing to realize that he can't make this team succeed.

unlike the James Madison coach, Sough Dakota Coach, North Dakota State Coach and a host of other 1-AA Teams who just beat-up on the D-1A big boys while we can not even beat our own level and maybe not some of the 1-AA schools.

It all goes back to coaching and right the staff is not getting it done in Year 4.

I think everyone has to admit that Coach Dodge has been a little snake bit so far at UNT. As PMG stated in another post UNT has been a virtual graveyard of coaches except for Coach Fry.

Dodge's first year he started a true freshman at QB (Vizza) along with the very very sub par players (generally speaking with the exception of a few) from Coach Dickey's era.

Dodge has experienced racial strife with some of those players, players quiting, having to deal with the loss of some scholarships because of GPA's of some of the team, having to play predominately freshmen and sophmores in his second year .... i guess because the talent level of the fresh/soph were better than the jr/sr..

Dodge's third year was starting RS Fresh RD who was in & out with injuries but at least NT was not getting smoked as much as in his first two years. Lost five or six games by a touchdown or less.

This year starting a QB who has seen very limited time since being on the team and now possibly out for the rest of the year. I will have to say that "OLDTIMER" in an earlier post noted that many of our starters were out of the Rice game due to injury....you know like broken bones and sprains.

IMHO, Coach Dodge has had to work through some incredible intangebles to get NT to where it is being competitive and still getting quality players to commit to NT. It would be comparable to driving in the Indy 500 and getting a flat on every lap.

What I saw last night was that this team can win on both sides of the ball. I think six or seven wins are still duable.

Those rationalizations are weak. This is Dodge's fourth season. Wins are all that matters.

Without a doubt. This guy is a leader as a sophomore. The next two years he will shock the nation. Beating TCU with Padron is not even out of the question, but the point is not how good Padron is so much it is how many chances do we keep giving to a player who has consistently shown that he can't cut it in D-1.

I agree with most of this BUT I do not agree with the part I bolded. IMO the problem was giving Riley the same damned play to run last week and last night. They were waiting on it! I believe he can still throw the ball 10 - 15 yards with authority and I hope he gets the chance to do something out of the Wildcat beside run off guard or tackle. So far this season his talent has been underutilized/wasted.

I agree. I am hopeful from what I saw last night.

I think 6 wins will have RV keep him. It starts next sat with a win over Army.

6 wins.. I feel so too. I think the program was barren of good players when he took over, but he and his lieutenants have systematically rebuilt personnel on both offensive and defensive teams. What’s left is the special team. Through this process, high character players have been brought into the program... individual grade point averages have risen. Mefeels, we are on the right path.

Other than Jeremiah Chapman, Kelvin Drake, Casey Fitzgerald, Victor Gill, Eddie Gilmore, Maurice Holman, Brandon Jackson, Derek Mendoza, Brandon Monroe, Joe Miller, Tobe Nwigwe, Craig Robertson, Draylen Ross (a career of criminal underutilization), Esteban Santiago, Truman Spencer, Montey Stevenson, Brock Stickler, Aaron Weathers, Nathan Tune, and JAMARIO FREAKING THOMAS...

I can't think of another Dickey recruit who was worth a damn for Dodge. Unless you count Meager, Burruss, Ike Thomas, Steve Warren, Chad Rose, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Good thing we ran off guys like Peachey and Banks, who only showed FLASHES of potentially exceptional talent.

Can we PLEASE put this thing to bed yet? Hell, there were SIX DICKEY RECRUITS IN THE STARTING LINEUP at the start of this year! Dodge has had four years of recruits come into the program, and out of 24 starting positions (11 on each side plus a kicker and punter), a quarter of the damn starting lineup that everyone was fawning over our potential was Dickey recruits. Take out the specialists, and it's 6 out of 22. And FIVE OF THEM ARE ON OFFENSE!

If the damn cupboard was sooooooo bare, why was half the starting offense still Dickey guys if our offensive specialist coach with all the great HS connections and the exceptional recruiting skills has had FOUR RECRUITING CLASSES to bring in his own guys? If you don't count Draylen Ross as a starter at TE, then it's down to four out of eleven.

Four out of eleven. If you don't count Ross as a starter, he's the ONLY Dickey recruit left on the offensive side of the ball that WASN'T a starter.

ENOUGH ABOUT THE BARE CUPBOARD.

This is the most amazing thing that's happened on this board in a while. You, sir, win the day. May the pages of your calendar turn ever faster as basketball season draws nearer to thee.

It reminds me of Matthew McConaughey's closing statement in "A Time to Kill", or Kevin Costner's "back... and to the left" summation in "JFK". The defense f'n rests.

I want to tell you a story. I'm going to ask you all to close your eyes while I tell you the story. I want you to listen to me. I want you to listen to yourselves. Go ahead. Close your eyes, please. This is a story about a high school football coach walking home from signing a college football coaching contract one sunny afternoon. I want you to picture this football coach, excited and ready to replicate his high school success in college ball. Suddenly the new season races up. Opponents with experienced coaches jump out and grab him. They drag him into a nearby field and they tie him up and they rip his black Under Armour logo clothes from his body. Now they climb on. First one, then the other, raping his team, shattering everything innocent and pure with a vicious thrust in a fog of drunken breath, sweat, and 50+ yard plays. And when they're done, after they've killed his tiny playbook, murdered any chance for him to keep his team sober, to have the ability to convert PATs, they decide to use his defense for target practice. They start throwing the ball at his defense. They throw them so hard that it tears the flesh all the way to their bones. Then they urinate on him.. on the scoreboard and literally. They laugh. Now comes the hanging. They have a rope. They tie a noose. Imagine the noose going tight around his neck and with a sudden blinding jerk he's giving up 50+ on a regular basis, burning redshirts, cracking down on cursing, and giving his son all the reps in practice as a redshirt while his feet are swinging wildly in the air. They don't find the ground. The hanging branch isn't strong enough. It snaps and he falls back to the earth. So they pick him up, throw him in the back of the truck and drive straight to the ESPN Bottom Ten. Pitch him over the edge. And he drops some thirty feet down to the sordid basement of internet ridicule. Can you see him? His black "Mean Green" gear in tatters, cleat marks on his chest and face? His raped, beaten, broken body soaked in their urine, soaked in their semen, soaked in her blood, left to die. Can you see him? I want you to picture that football coach. Now imagine he's Darrell Dickey.
