Villanova Has Offer To Join Big East For Football

Villanova has already been a member of the Big East in all sports except football since 1980. They recently won an FCS football championship and now have been asked by the Big East to consider moving up to FBS. But they have problems. They have no football facility large enough for FBS play (12K stadium now) and Temple already uses the Pro Philly stadium for their games. Financial expenses (more ships) will be a consideration also. I think they'll do it just to stay aligned with the better basketball members in case they split off.

How does this affect UNT? Some CUSA members (ECU, UCF, and Memphis) had been pushing for Big East membership...opening possible opportunities for UNT to jump to CUSA. Now those slots seem limited to off the table if Nova jumps in, unless they want to expand to 12. The Big East had also been concerned about the Big10 taking some Big East schools to form a 16-team SuperConference.

Would the Big East ever want to have a westward expansion? And maybe consider a team or two in TX? I know it is a very far fetched idea but it is something to consider.

Okay, it's been considered for a few nannoseconds and concluded that it likely wouldn't happen unless the two applicants were Texas and Texas A&M.

Villanova is a small school but because they are already in the Big East they would have a leg up on Temple for football attendance. They are vital because nine members makes for easier scheduling and gives a buffer should the Big 10/12 or ACC decide to expand. They could be a tenant at Lincoln or maybe even at Penn's Franklin Field until they could expand their own stadium.

If they wanted to expand west I know Memphis has been talked about. So if Memphis is a possibility, I would consider adding a couple of more teams to sort of partner with them...schools in TX would make sense I think. The first two are definitely the most realistic..tho I am not sure about UCF. I'm not sure of USF likes the idea of being the same conference as UCF.

The Big East is at 16 schools for basketball. That will make expansion hard. They talked about when it looked like Big 12 was falling apart, but I don't think they want to expand. That's why they are going with 'Nova as 9th football school (now everybody will play 4 home and 4 road conference games).

I think the Big East will eventually split into two conferences. One with football schools and one for everybody else.
