Memphis Poster Hittin' La Tech With Unt

Memphis poster is kinda hammering La Tech with UNT's new stadium and NCAA trips.

http://www.latechbbb.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79753

I love the clown who tries to state that our attendance is less than theirs. As of 2008 it was by like 600 people a game....and to think that the new stadium won't push that number up by 15% (at least) is just plain outright returded. Where is that link for 2009 attendance stats again??

When people say we are a commuter school they are being ignorant beyond belief. We have around 7,000 students living ON campus. Take away the graduate students, and that is about 25% of the student body. New dorms are being planned, and are on the way, as the current ones are filled to capacity. There are 7-8 MASSIVE student apartment complexes within 0-2 miles of campus, and ALL of these are served by the UNT bus system, so these students really are not even commuters. There are also an even greater number of medium and small complexes. Also, students are a MAJOR player in the house rental business in Denton.

We do not have to sugar coat the numbers, we simply are NOT a commuter school anymore.

Yeah... I've never really understood the commuter school thing. I live in a townhouse with 3 roommates 4 blocks from campus, so are we commuters? Do people actually expect upperclassmen to live in dorms when apartment complexes like the The Forum exist? I want the college experience, not the dorm experience, so if that means I am contributing to UNT being a commuter school then I'm not too worried about it.

I agree. Probably closer to 1/3 live on campus.

When you consider the burgeoning metropolis that is Ruston, LA and half the pop. go to school at LaTech, I can see how someone can lose track of the half a percent of UNT students in a place with 6.5 million people.

UT must be a commuter school as well. They can only hold 7,100 of their pop on campus.

All unmarried full-time undergraduate students, regardless of

age or whether or not emancipated, except those living with

parents, are required to live in on-campus residence halls as

long as space is available, and purchase a meal plan.

The above is the official La Tech policy. Maybe this is why they have a problem with commuter label. Apparently, you either live at home or on campus or just hope there are no dorm rooms available.

I went to CollegeBoard.com to get the "commuter school" numbers for UNT and Louisiana Technical Institute...

83% of UNT first year students live on campus. It also says that 16% of all undergraduates live on campus, which is an old number. Using 7,000 as our approximate dorm capacity, just under 25% of all undergraduates live on campus.

The first year number for Louisiana Tech is not provided, which is unfortunate because that is the only number that really matters. The disparity in the two percentages for UNT is caused by the very significant number of students that move to off campus student apartment complexes after their freshman year. Keep in mind, the farthest of these is only a couple miles away, and all have UNT bus stops.

It does say that Louisiana Tech has 33% of all undergraduates living on campus. In the booming metropolis that is Ruston (pronounced rusting), Louisiana though, I imagine they do not have the number of high quality, nearby off campus options that we do, leaving living on campus as the best option available.

Edit: GrandGreen's post above also helps explain these numbers.

Ever notice no one questions the percentage of UT or A&M students who live in dorms? The idea of the commuter school is everyone leaves Denton on the weekends and there is no social life. Those who actually believe that have never been to Denton on a weekend when classes are in session. I will admit it is a bit lean between semesters!

I did a check of the Housing website and the actual number of on-campus spaces in the residences halls is closer to 6,000, not 7,000, which explains a little bit of the variance in the numbers you mentioned.

That's not far off from UNT policy...

In accordance with policy #18.5.1, it is the University of North Texas' policy for all new freshmen (with specific exceptions) to live within UNT Housing while in their freshman year. (http://www.unt.edu/policy/UNT_Policy/volume3/18_5_1.html

I don't know, seems to be quite different, unless you are referring to freshmen only.

You are right. I was just going off a number someone in housing told me awhile back. Looks like our actual percentage is in between 21% and 22%.

Don't know why we are arguing this guys...they have less than 1/3 the students we have. They also live in a town of just over 20,000 people. The closest town worthy of mention is Monroe at just over 30 miles away...with it's own school in the city. If ULM can't make a metro of over 270k popular..then how the heck will Ruston have any sort of media market whatsoever??? Yes...UNT's Football team is slumping right now...but I still wouldn't trade our potential future for your future. Lets take a look at the cities that have existing CUSA teams within them.

I have to use 2000 Census Results in most cases

UCF- Orlando (over 2 million people in the metro)

Marshall- Huntington WV (a 285k Metro)

Rice- Houston Tx (almost 6 million metro)

SMU- Dallas (over 6 million metro)

UTEP- El Paso (751k metro)

Tulsa- in.......Tulsa (almost 1 million people in metro)

ECU- Greenville SC (183k in metro)

Houston- in Houston...derr....same stats as above

Tulane- New Orleans (1.2 million metro)

USM- Hattiesburg Miss. (148k metro)

Memphis- in Memphis TN (1.2 million metro)

UAB- Birmingham AL (1.2 million metro)

Now lets see what Ruston is working with.............oh......................oh dear..................man that sux.

Stickville.jpg

So you take Ruston's 20k (does this include the 10k students?) and give them absolutely positively nothing to do on the weekends............next thing you know.....they are showing up to every football game. Now take our situation.....we have barely begun to tap into the school spirit potential we could have in the metro alone and still have the same amount showing up to our games as "LA Tech's extremely loyal fan base". What does that tell you? LA Tech has peaked....that stadium...if ever replaced at all will never be the quality of stadium that we are currently raising. The state is poor and the CUSA knows this. They aren't trying to get into the 87k graduates of LA Tech's pockets....but maybe the 175k alumni of UNT with over 100k of them in our metro alone would make more sense?????? Kinda a no brainer.

Now I am not saying we are a shoe-in for any expansion by the conference.....but Ruston will not be able to tout the "but we were in the WAC" card...or the "but we have 17k in the stands" argument that they currently spout out.

If we get beat out....it will not be by this school.

I wonder what their policy is for couples who are married but are brother and sister? Im sure that issue has been crossed there.

Are residents in on-campus fraternity/sorority houses counted as living on campus? They used to be, and I'm sure there are a whole lot more now.

After a tour of their boards, I can safely say that issue has been crossed many more times than not. That, and the meth labs around Ruston must put out a fine product.

The on-campus sorority housing wasn't on the list I looked at, so that would add to the numbers as well. Same for the fraternity houses.

I don't really know how those count in when those sorts of "on-campus" numbers are calculated for reporting. That could be another reason why our calculations and the published calculations vary.

And, as has already been pointed out, if you counted "on-campus" by just drawing a circle around the campus area, it would be a much larger percentage of our students with all the large apartment complexes nearby.
