Wuts up MG Nation? It has been along time since i last posted on here, (00-03' glory years) but its good to see my account still works. Just curious to see what you guys think about how the new stadium stacks up against other schools in Conference USA. IMO when complete the new MG stadium will be one of the nicest outside the BCS. Alot of people might think who cares, but i think its important to stay out in front of our competitors with our facillities. Last time we were up for conference expansion we got canned for UTEP cuz we had crusty old Fouts Field. I know we arent winning right now which isnt so attractive to other conferences (or just CUSA ), but im know we will get back to our winning ways very soon. Its only a matter of time that we win the Sunbelt again... That being said here is how i break down some of the other CUSA/Sunbelt stadia compared to what will be rocking in 2011! NOTE-I havent been to alot of these stadiums so plz let me know how we will stack up against CUSA/Sunbelt facillities.

CUSA/Sunbelt

1.ECU- Dowden-Ficklen Stadium - Steady progession with team and stadium renovated to seat 50K

2.Memphis - Liberty Bowl - Great stadium with a great bowl seats 50k

3.UCF - Brighthouse Networks Stadium - One of the newest stadia, press boxes are small though

4.UNT - NEW Mean Green Stadium - Best location and will be newest with a huge pressbox and suites

5.USM - M.M. Roberts Stadium - Looks very nice seats 36k

6.Tulsa - Skelly Field H.A. Chapman - Very nice and new stadium but holds only 30k

7.SMU - Gerald Ford - nice horse shoe shape but still only holds 30k

8.UAB - Legion Field - Hard to put a 80K seater this low but its old and they only avg 25K

9.Marshall - Joan C Edwards Stadium - Its big 40k + but its slightly outdated

10.UTEP - Sunbowl - very large but its old and looks out dated

11.FIU - FIU Stadium - Great design and will be upgraded to 40k +

12.Troy - Veterans Memorial Stadium - Lost naming rights money but has nice layout and nice press box

13.ULL - Cajun Field - not the nicest but open end hill means 40k +

14.MTSU - Johnny Red Stadium - nice layout but its old needs makeover

15.UH - Robertson Stadium - Very old looks ran down

16.Tulane - Superdome - Sorry it belongs to the Saints

17.Rice - Rice Stadium - HUGE PINK ELEPHANT!!!

18.ULM - Malone Stadium - Monroe smells bad

19.Ark St - ASU Stadium - Damn that thing is ugly

Thanks for the rundown of all the stadia. I think SMU's stadium seats 32,000, though.

I've made only one Grand Opening of a new stadium and that was the *Houston Astrodome on April 9, 1965. Am looking forward to making my 2'nd stadium grand opening in September, 2011, in Denton, Texas, when upwards to 35,000 (Standing Room Only) Mean Green & UH Cougar fans enter the turnstile of the New Stadium At The Mean Green Village (as it is presently called in Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine). (I'll be in Denton later this morning with SUMG & Rick Spears to take a firsthand look at our new football palace as it rises like the Phoenix on the rolling prairies of North Texas).

* Got to see Mickey Mantle hit the first home run in the 'Dome (albeit was in an exhibition game that night).

* Got to see my first U.S President (LBJ and Ladybird who were sitting in Roy Hofeinz's (the Astrodome's brainchild) luxury box.

* Got to see the first official luxury box in a U.S. stadium (which belonged to Roy Hofeinz--a former mayor of Houston)

* Got to see the Houston Astros beat the New York Yankees in extra innings won by a Texas League single by veteran baseballer Nellie Fox for the winning run. (Yes, his left jaw was full of his trademark tobacco & many of us still think he should be in Cooperstown.

* Got to see "THE" 1965 version of the New York Yankees of which most of that team are now in Baseball's Hall of Fame.

GMG!

Nice breakdown of all of them. I'd go on record saying that the new North Texas stadium will be the nicest outside the BCS conferences. Not the biggest, but the nicest. The fact that HKS is behind the NT stadium and it's their first one is huge. Go around Dallas and look at the HKS buildings (they're the most impressive buildings architecturally in the Metroplex) and that'll give you an idea.

You left out FAU which would be dead last no question.

Addendum: I think the scheduling of the University of Houston Cougars for the Grand Opening of our stadium was an act of genius by Rick V.

Why?

Instead of us getting just a "blurb" in the Houston Chronicle if it had been any other school, we will get a full write-up of our game for all down there to read with many of the Greater Houston population (including HS coaches & potential recruits) will be finding out for the first time about our new football palace. We can't pay for that kind of publicity we rarely get on the golden Gulf Coast of Texas.

Good point, Plumm!

Here is how to accurately come up with the SMU stadium capacity. Take one of SMU's recent 'sold out' games and take the number of tickets sold to the visiting team and then add the 400 that SMU fans bought and you have the correct number of seats at Ford Stadium.

Posted

Good list but I take exception with Legion Field, off campus home of the UAB 'Blazers. A better list would be "on-campus" stadiums only.

Also, I don't think we give enough credit to Ford Stadium at SMU. That is one fine, classic looking stadium. I'd put it up there in the top five, certainly ahead of UCF's erector set of a stadium.

I am SO glad that our stadium does not look like Brighthouse (UCF).

Kudos to HKS for the great design work they did for us (except maybe for the Eagle "tail" in the N end zone).

Maybe so, but how good will UNT look after Houston kicks them around like a rag doll....not only can this happen, but probably will happen..Cougs have good speed and generally a good team.

Houston will come in bruised and battered after being thrashed at home by UCLA in the opening week. :P

Same could be said about RICE this season after having faced the Texas Longhorns in Reliant the week before coming to Fouts. :P

Having not seen most of these stadiums (and having not seen ours when completed) I can't say for sure if I agree or disagree with the whole list. I can say, though, I've seen Brighthouse and we are DEFINITELY gonna be ahead of UCF.

Agreed. I'd put SMU's Ford ahead of Tulsa and UCF as far as stadiums are concerned. Ford is a great facility.

Ford is first class. Rice, while huge, is still a great place as far as sight lines, IMO. Sun Bowl is, too.

Having said that, I believe UNT's stadium is going to be one of the best places to watch a football game in the country when it's completed, and don't forget about the great area that will be available around the stadium for tailgating and hanging out. A lot better than some places.

Like Fenway Park's "Green Monster" and Arlington Stadium's "Home Run Porch", the "Eagle's Tail Feather" section of the new stadium is going to be an icon of our new Mean Green home.

...Until it's torn down to complete the horseshoe when we upgrade.

The new stadium and Ford Field I think will be the best ones overall. Heck I would say all of the new stadiums are on top just because they are new and updated to todays standards. In the end, I think most of them are on par with stadiums in its levels. Some are old but still very useful and a little lipstick here and there will do wonders for the old facilities.

thanks for the responses guys. i wanted to say my list reflects New MG being sold out 32k every week and us winning 9 games a year. yea i have to admit that i have Gerald Ford Stadium a little low, but I must say though that when you take into account stadium size, age, location, attendance, and all of the other factors that make a college football game what it is... you have to put New MG Stadium right up there with the best of the best outside the BCS. Ford field looks like the gold standard for Non-BCS stadia but i think NT can do much better than them. Ford stadium is hard to get too and its traffic like hell on I45. I guess thats what excites me the most about this whole thing... just how sweet it "could" be.

Posted (edited)

I am also excited about all the traffic down 35 who will see it, including all the Sooners coming down for the Red River Shoot Out. Not that we are Oklahoma, but the "sleeping giant" is waking up!

One reason why I like college football so much is how anything can happen at one's home stadium on any given Saturday, especially one's Grand Opening of a new stadium. (UH will lose their CUSA Player of the Year QB afer this season albeit they will probably just reload--but it appears to me that we are "slowly & surely" reloading, too).

Many of us on this board watched the Mean Green powder the UH Coog's 28-0 the year before they won the SWC and went to the Cotton Bowl.

Yes, we do drink a lot of green kool-ade on this board but why the heck not. It beats the hell of that green sheeee-t Jim Joness flock were drinking on that fateful day. (Jeez, I can't believe I just said.....THAT!)

Meh. Ford looks nice. Parking generally sucks, overpriced tickets, You have to walk a mile from your car to the stadium, unless you wait for the buss at Mockingbird station, the aisle sperating the upper and lower decks are small and crowded with people standing around.

easily the three that should be at the bottom are ULM--Malone field, UAB--Legion field, and USM MM Roberts stadium

malone is a turd

legion field could literally be dangerous to your health

and mm roberts -somehow they took a 35 yr old stadium and make it seem it is 135 years old
