2010 Roster

Still not 100% updated, I'm assuming, but some interesting new weights listed:

Obi and Akpunku are both now listed at 240lbs...more DE than LB.

Gaines is a bit smaller than anticipated at 230.

Atkinson has trimmed up a bit to 287.

Boutwell up to a robust 254.

Abbe may have to redshirt to LOSE weight as he's tipping the scales 357.

Marquese Davis is up to 260...maybe a move to the DL(?) would actually get him on the field.

Prior and Robertson both about 230 now.

Herron and Phillips have both added at least 5 pounds.

Assuming all of this is good weight, kudos to Charr and the rest of the strength coaches...especially with AK and Obi.

Looks like Coach Charr and his team are doing a great job getting the Mean Green ready for the season. I would think this is all "muscle" and "good" weight gain.

Ditto on that. Didn't know Santiago was quite that big. Hope he's ready for a very special Senior season.

I wonder if Ross weight is correct. The Green Gang may just be relying on a sheet of paper that was not updated. It is strange that he is exactly the same weight as last year. You think they would have checked before using it in a post, but things happen.

As far as Abbe, at 6'4; he probably no rounder than Booger and Booger could play a little. Per Greengang face book today, he apparently is not afraid to mix it up a little.

Position by Position

CENTER: looks good with Kelvin and JJ averaging 6'3" 290.

OL: looks a lot better with the whole bunch (minus Kokjohn) averaging 6'4" 292 (Noble, Franklin, Gill, and Leppo bring it down). Intersting to note that Antonio Johnson reported at 292, apparently he's really worked to add weight. He could be a sleeper recruit. As someone mentioned earlier, Santiago at 320 was pleasantly surprising.

QB: with the main two candidates at 6'4" 225 I'd say that looks better than in recent history (though I have a hard time believing Tune could weigh 226).

RB: Dunbar measured well as did Byrd; glad to see Hamilton gain some weight. Mathis and Mosley could be short yardage guys.

WR: As a group this bunch looks good. Surprised Jackson didn't gain more weight. Bynes looks like a beast, and Stradford gained some weight as well. Riley looked to measure well for an inside guy.

TE: Draylen Ross and Hawkins (surprised he's not at OL) look to be the blockers, while Fitzpatrick and Olawale are the receivers. I'd imagine Greg Brown will fit into this mix as well.

DE: They are all shapes and sizes, but AK and Obi obviously made great strides to be every-down players. Disappointed to see Gaines so small, but Weber's weight is down obviously to be more agile and McCoy has a freakish frame. Boutwell has worked hard and should contribute. Anyiam measures like he could be an anchor against a physical running team.

DT: Don't like to see 357 and 336, but do like to see the couple of guys around 6'3" 300ish who can move a little bit in Atkinson, Jackson, and White. Anyiam could slide in this mix as well.

LB: Much more impressive measurables this year. Guys starting to look like bona fide LB's. Obviously they've all worked hard, and hopefully are faster as well. Orr has a nice MLB build for an 18 year old.

DB: Cook and Will Wright Jr. have great frames. Good to see Royce and Ira put on a little weight to have more lead in their pencil against the run. Downing has a nice frame for the newcomers.

All in all it looks like the kids have really worked hard, and we will not look like a JV team on the field anymore. Charr has certainly paid for himself in player development, and let's hope it translates to some W's.

Two things.

1) Pardon me for being so skeptical, but after seeing numerous 5'8" players listed at 6 foot, I am going to have to wait and see the team on the walk into the stadium before I believe some of these numbers.

2) These seem like some outragous weight gains. Wasn't Santiago about 260 last year? Now he is 320? If true, can this all be good weight? Will he lose mobility or coordination at this weight? Just using Santiago as an example. This could apply to any large weight gain.

It would be interesting to see a comparison in weight from last year's roster to this year's roster.

Almost all listed heights in college football are overstated. It is done so much that any school using the actual measurements would be criticized for failure to recruit college size players. If you remember NT supposedly posted the actual heights a couple of years ago and almost all the linemen were an inch or two shorter. For example, Santiago had been listed at 6'5. Most of the players magically gained their height back the next year, although a few like Santiago did not go back up. Several years ago, I looked up the college roster heights of about 15 good players and compared them to the pro combine heights. On average the college rosters listed players at 1 1/2 inches taller than actual. I am a little less than 6'3 and I am taller than most college football players listed at 6'4. Next to 40 times, football players height is the second most fibbed about stat. It is interesting because really tall guys are usually close to accurate, but average size college players are almost always shorter.

You can see both the last year and current roster on the official site, so do your own comparison.

Santiago was listed as about 285 last year, you must be thinking of Gill. Who is still in the two sixties.
