Unless we perform miracles in the SBC Tourney.

Flu becomes Davis’ biggest obstacle to record

02/26/2003

By Tim MacMahon / Staff Writer

The flu has made it extremely doubtful that senior swingman Chris Davis will finish his career as the all-time leading scorer in North Texas history.

Davis, who has missed the Mean Green’s last two games because of the illness, needs 76 points to surpass Kenneth Lyons for the school’s career scoring record. UNT completes its regular season Saturday night at New Mexico State.

Unless the Mean Green wins in the first round of the Sun Belt tournament, Davis must average 38 points per game to move past Lyons. Davis’ career-high scoring output is 37 points on Feb. 22, 2001, against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Davis currently has 2,216 points. Lyons, who played for the Mean Green from 1979 to ’83, completed his career with 2,291 points.

Lyons, a frequent visitor to practices and a constant presence at home games this season, was upset when he learned that Davis would not play in his final game at the Super Pit last Saturday.

"I want Chris to be the one to break my record," Lyons said.
