Since the university has spent so much time and money branding the academic side of itself "UNT", does anyone know why the athletic department labels its teams "North Texas"? The inconsistency has always seemed strange to me given the publicity that the athletic department can attract.

I don't recall the year, but when I came up the portal at Texas Stadium when we were playing UTA, and I saw the lime green helmets ( with the STYLIZED EAGLE), lime green jerseys, and lime green pants, I thought they were the greatest football uniform I'd ever seen. Seems we had a lot of success with that look. I'd love to see if lightning could strike twice.

White, Green, SOW, no SOW, Flying Worm...I don't care...let's just WIN in whatever color or logo combo selected. As long as UNT is playing in the uniform, I like them (except maybe for those black things some "un-named" coach stuck out there one game!).

I'm betting we'll see a different look to open the new stadium...don't know if it will debut this season or not...maybe at the K State game as the last at Fouts...you know, out with the old and in with the new sort of celebration.

Heck, play naked...just start a winning tradition. :o

I agree. The old uniforms were classic. I've never seen a better looking uniform. Maybe someone can talk RV into letting the team wear them for a few games. If we win and the fans have a positive response then we can stick with them.

A retro game would be fun! It would also be a marketing opportunity because who wouldn't for just one game want to dawn that hideous shade of green and buy a souvenier T or cap! Market the heck out of it in advance and treat it like the Mavs do when they first started wearing their green and blue again.

In fact, every year we could have a Retro game and if possible bring in an opponent who we played during that era - such as Florida State or Mississippi State or an old Southland foe like Sam Houston or Texas State.

Hideous?? No way. Best uniforms we ever had!

can someone explain the benefit of wearing throwback unis? would it create a mad dash to meangreengear.com to purchase a replica? no. would fans come out to the game just to see them? no. would the team be inspired by the opportunity to wear the throwbacks? no. no matter how little the cost, i'd rather see that money used elsewhere.

I think it would be a great marketing opportunity! It would help students realize the long tradition of football at North Texas and the greats that played here. Everybody loves throwback jerseys. Why do you think almost every sport has a throwback game?

More importantly though, it would be good university education for students. Most don't even know we played football back then.

Good questions and good opinions. Personally, I'd definitely make sure to make it out to see the throwback uni's. Could take a game of relatively little importance and largely increase the significance IMO. They pay off still may not be there, but it would be cool to see.

That would be one way to get my wife to go to football games! In the interest of the ladies out there, maybe let lineman wear uniforms!

Otherwise, there might be a significant aversion from putting the quarterback under center.

I think what you guys are forgetting is that the last decades most memorable run came during the all emerald green/script uniform era. Anyone who's even heard of us the last few years in DFW recognizes that era. The flying worm, lime green uniform, Mean Joe days are well behind us.

Please bring back green helmets. Current white helmets are terrible. We should never have departed from our '03 uniforms. All green at home and all white on the road. No stripes anywhere.

The right way to send off Fouts would be with some lime green flying worm throwbacks and a win over K-State. The line to buy throwback jerseys would form to the left.

The apple green, different from lime, uniforms were and are the best uniforms NT has ever had. Instantly recognizable and a logo that spawned the current Iowa Hawkeye and the Kansas State Wildcat.

I am also a fan of the emerald green, but it was too dark on television and prefer the current green, which I believe is NT's official color, to the darker shade. I am not a fan of the green on green or green on black uniform though. I much prefer a green jersey with white pants w/ stripes and either white on white or white on solid green pants. Just my preferences.

But wouldn't it make sens for a team called The Mean Green to wear all green?

Apparently not. Out of the 28 Division I teams with a color in their moniker, 11 wear helmets that "match". Break the stats down further, and only 5 out of 17 FBS (old Division I-A) "match" but 6 of 11 in FCS (old Division I-AA) wear their color. I'm not saying that I like UNT's white helmets, but the numbers don't lie, most Division I-FBS teams don't have a helmet to match their moniker; while not overwhelming, more FCS schools have "matching" helmets then those that don't.

Seems like UNT isn't the only Division I team to "say one thing and wear another"

That being said, I do think UNT should ditch the white helmets, but if any helmet changes happen, the uniforms would have to change too. UNT should take inspiration from other teams that have white as one of their two colors (ex. Arkansas, Cincinnati, Indiana, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Rutgers, etc.)
