In addition the number of shares from the NCAA men's basketball tournament has been declining as bowl costs have risen. The nine-member conference pools some of its bowl liabilities. Costs associated with the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl were expected to be higher with Nevada replacing Hawaii as the WAC representative in 2009.

Based on the comments from folks in Houston it would seem that they will be lobbying MWC to leave the WAC. If La Tech leaves because of the travel costs then my prediction that the WAC will implode may become fact.

Even the lowly Sunbelt has two bowl tie ins. The key for UNT is to see if in fact there is the possibility of a potential merger of Sunbelt/CUSA to adjust both toward more regional conferences. Or there maybe opportunities to create a new conference out of western CUSA and Sunbelt schools and maybe pull in La Tech from the WAC.

My dream conference would be UNT, Tulsa, Ark St, La Tech, ULLafayette, Tulane, Houston, UTEP, SMU, Rice which would give us a Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisana regional conference.

If Tech joins the WAC is 5th out of 5 in BCS payout and the ability to get a fourth or fifth bowl arises for the Sun Belt. Right now we are at a maximum allowed.

2009 WAC BCS Payout was $3.2 million

2010 WAC BCS Payout was $7.2 million
